StevenGuthmiller Posted August 11, 2019 Author Posted August 11, 2019 Started scratching up a few details for the engine. First I wasn't enamored with the molded in oil filler cap on the valve cover, so I removed it and whipped one up quick, as well as adding the O-ring on the other valve cover for the vacuum line. Then I cranked out a pair of fuel filters. Steve
STYRENE-SURFER Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 East. Ha, had me thinking. When I (whip out parts) it normally takes me three days and as many attempts. Lookin good.
StevenGuthmiller Posted August 11, 2019 Author Posted August 11, 2019 More tiny engine parts. Alternator bracket. Carburetor linkage pivot. Fuel line splitter. Steve

Super28 Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 Steve. Where did you get the wheels from? Perfect mags!

If you look back through the thread you can see that there were several attempts to get the wheels just right. They were actually built using 3 different sets of wheels as donors. The spoke section came from the AMT 1962 Chevy Belair kit. The outer rim was part of the racing wheels from a '67 Ford Galaxie kit. The center caps were shaved from a set of wheels from a '68 Mustang kit. Valve stems were made from plastic rod and tires were donated by Bruce Coy, (Belugawrx) Steve

StevenGuthmiller Posted August 12, 2019 Author Posted August 12, 2019 A quick mock up and "pinning" of the intake parts, and then a quick dip stick was fabricated. Steve
Scott8950 Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 man i dunno how you fab up stuff that small. Very impressive as always, i can't wait to see this beauty finished!
garagepunk66 Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 (edited) Steve, can you elaborate on how you made the breather grommet in the valve cover? Drilled a hole in the end of round styrene rod and rounded the outside radius before cutting it off? Everything looks fantastic Edited August 13, 2019 by garagepunk66
peekay Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Great progress pictures Steve. Your workmanship is always a joy to watch.

It was a simple operation of drilling a small hole in the end of a short length of plastic rod and then drilling a hole in the valve cover large enough to accept that piece of rod and slipping it into the valve cover until the desired portion was exposed on the surface and then gluing it from underneath. After the glue is dry, you can trim any excess rod protruding on the underside of the valve cover and lightly sand the exposed portion on the top to round it down slightly. Steve
StevenGuthmiller Posted August 15, 2019 Author Posted August 15, 2019 A couple more little details. I wanted to be able to display the engine with the air cleaners on or off to show off the beautiful Fireball carbs, so I added a couple of air cleaner bolts to the carbs. Then I decided that the radiator cap that was molded to the radiator wasn't going to cut it, so a new one was scratched. Steve
StevenGuthmiller Posted August 15, 2019 Author Posted August 15, 2019 Next I added the radiator overflow tube. This battery had no clamp detail, only the posts. Let me tell you, it was a real test of my eyes and dexterity to make something halfway presentable! ? I believe now I'm ready to start painting some of these parts! Steve
ChrisBcritter Posted August 15, 2019 Posted August 15, 2019 "Bet that's a job and a half..." There's a real good set of clamps on the AMT '62 Catalina's battery; after having whittled away most of said battery (and part of my sanity) to get at the darn things, I may cast them next time.
StevenGuthmiller Posted August 15, 2019 Author Posted August 15, 2019 I didn't think that these Fireball carbs could look any better........and then I painted them!!! ? I shudder to think how they will look after some detail painting and a wash! Steve

I probably could have saved myself a ton of work and looked for a different battery........but where's the fun in that? ? Steve

I wonder if there was an issue with either Fotki or the forum over the past couple of days. As I said, I had a couple of issues posting photos a couple of days ago in other threads. Hopefully it is taken care of now. Steve Without being a techie guy, I suspect it’s a forum issue rather than a Fotki issue. Mine are doing the same, but only on this site and not on other forums I post the same pictures to. The pictures you post are working fine on fotki’s end - when I quote a post with missing pictures I can see them, and when I copy the link to the pictures into a new tab in my browser I can see them just fine. All that said, great build Steve! Love it!! It’s worth the effort to get to see the pics ??? Those carbs looks INCREDIBLE! Like you say; I can’t wait to see them with some additional detailing! Thanks Jim. I just asked Dave what he thought that I should do about future posts and he told me unequivocally to post them from my hard drive. I agree with you. I have no issues of any kind posting Fotki images on any other site and even the photos that people claim that they can't see on this forum show up just fine on my end. I suppose that's part of the reason why I didn't realize that there was any kind of issue until someone brought it up. So I guess going forward, I will begin posting photos from my hard drive on this site. I wouldn't want you to miss any of the action! Steve
StevenGuthmiller Posted August 17, 2019 Author Posted August 17, 2019 The rest of the engine parts painted. Steve
