I had the pleasure of meeting Paul on several occations: A super nice guy, great competitor on the track, and an inspiration to be around. I, as well as everyone, knew it was coming, but that doesn't make it any easier.

God Speed Mr. Newman.

Not to mention the fantastic food products and all his work for charities.

Oh... and not a half-bad actor, either. Two of my all-time favorite movies: "The Verdict" and "Road to Perdition". Guess who starred in both of them...

Very true, but I only knew him as a race car driver. He has been known to just walk away from someone who would try to talk movies with him at the track. At the track he was just another driver and didn't expect to be treated any different than anyone else. He was just Paul at the track.

:D When? "Cool Hand Luke" can't be gone. When did it happen? I haven't heard nothin on the TV, or the radio. Man, What a BUMMER!!!! :(

It's been on CNN this morning... passed last night or this morning, apparently. Leaves behind quite a legacy in movies, racing, and charities..

We knew it was coming, he has been home "resting" the past couple of weeks. It was just a matter of time. It happened late last night - morning.

In my eyes, Paul will be remembered for his charitable work and his monogamy more than anything else. Yeah, the movies allowed him the luxury of the racing and the celebrity to have his food products known, but the fact that he kept his life grounded with the reality that he had a family “first†always impressed me.

When you consider that a man with his looks and fame could have partied all the time, done drugs and chased all the women, he chose to work for his own charity and build a family. In Hollywood, you don’t see that every day.

Very sad to hear.

A true gentleman...

RIP

Second that, RIP...

I just liked the fact, like Chris said, he was just another racer at the track, no one special because he was in movies, just a regular race car driver. He has my attitude for sure....and NO ONE in Hollywood would ever act like him or do the stuff he did... no one :angry:

Although it was his second, he was married to Joanne Woodward for 50 years. That should tell you something.

R.I.P Paul.

And I would also like to add that when I was growing up in Brainerd, MN. Paul would frequent BIR a lot. My dad even ran gas can man for him at one race. I was able to go into the pits and not only would he make an effort to talk with the kids he would also treat you as an equal. Probably one of my best remembrances as a child was at the track and him sharing his peanuts and popcorn with me.

Truly a great individual.

Oh no, this is sad news indeed! I always liked him and Steve McQueen, I think they had the same kind of personality; cool and calm, and liked racing.

Mr Newman starred in a movie from the 60's that was about the Nobel prize I think, and they were in Stockholm. It was cool to see the (for me) familiar places around the city. In one sequence, Mr Newman's character is supposed to meet some shady person in a house, and naturally there's a fight, and they end up on the roof. Mr Newman gets a punch, and falls off the building..... I'm thinking, since I know where they are: "Oh no, he's going to fall onto the railroad tracks just below the building!" But instead he falls into the water, about 100 feet away!! Who would know.....? Only "Mr Hawkeye" from Stockholm.... :P A bit of movie trivia for you!
