Nick F40 Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Well, this is my the Tamiya kit and my first race car kit. The decals gave me trouble as some would rip a bit coming off the backing paper but I improvised and did the best going through decal hell...for me! I have FULL respect for you guys that do those cars with the full body ones. Built box stock with the exception of the carbon fibre hood. I also cut out the grill insert at the bottom of the front bumper and personally think it's cooler because you can see the two air ducts. I was going to make a street car out of it but the paint came out decent and I thought the decals would look pretty cool...so I put them on. Lately, things have been screwing up a little with this one but thanks to you guys, you helped me love this thing some more! Gotta love Tamiya kits and paints. Either though I used Dupli Color for the body The paint is actually a funny story because the original paint was Avignon Blue but that got out of hand after I saw some panel lines that popped up after it was painted, either though I didn't see them when I sanded it! So it took a couple coats and sanded it until I got to primer and decide to recoat it with Ice Blue Metallic, and it almost matches but it turned out sweet. Enjoy! Touring Cars for life!
Brendan Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Very nice job on the car. Hopefully we've converted you to race cars.
Nick F40 Posted September 30, 2008 Author Posted September 30, 2008 Thanks and I will have to say, most definetly! This kit went together so good and and detail is great, loved it, then of course, it IS a Tamiya I always loved these cars and had to build on, i'll just have to get used to the decals though! I am addicted though, I am switched for life! here's a close up of the interior and engine for those who missed or just want to see it again
Andy Wyatt Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 SWEEEEET!! You certainly can't tell by the finished product that you had decal difficulties...great job!
CAL Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Hey that is pretty cool. Turned out real nice Nick.
RadRidesByDan Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 ###### Bro......excellent build. The detaing, paint and decal work is fantastic......I likes alot. 2 BIG thumbs up from me
Mike Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Love it! I'm buying one!!! Decal Hell is a venture isn't it? LMAO I've built a couple that are in decal hell. Oddly enough, I love building them because they look great when you get them done.
Nick F40 Posted September 30, 2008 Author Posted September 30, 2008 Thank you all for the comments Love it! I'm buying one!!! Decal Hell is a venture isn't it? LMAO I've built a couple that are in decal hell. Oddly enough, I love building them because they look great when you get them done. Yeah I hear ya, but I do have to agree, when it's done, you forget all that you went through and it turns out great!
Daniel Peterson Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Well done, Nick! Just don't turn your back on V8s and RWD because this came out so nice! What the heck is in the water in New Holland? Team Kern sure churns out some darn fine work!
Wildrice Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Very nice. I have 3 of the Accord kits to build.
935k3 Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Looks good Nick. The lines that reappeared are classic ghosting caused by hot paints like Duplicolor. You need a good primer base and apply paint very lighly at first. Silvers and lighter color metallics tend to be hotter paints than other colors. I have even had Tamiya's paint do it. Some people say brushing on some liquid glue over the lines after sanding cause them to raise. Then sanding agin should keep them from coming back. Decals have always been one of my favorite things in modelling(I really mean that), I mastered them pretty early on but I have a learned allot over the years. One tip that really works good is a hot damp cloth pressed over a decal works btter then solvents for gett them to bend and conform. They can be set instantly this way. Sometimes a hair dryer on a very low setting works but you need to be careful with plastic.
dub Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Nice decal work. You can keep 'em! Decal hatred is the sole reason I probably won't tackle a race car for a looooonnnnggg time! BMF on the other hand..... That doesn't bother me. Go figure.... Anyway, I like the interior the most, it's better than I can pull off. Great detail work! Too bad these Japanese kits don't have complete motors usually. This one would have had cool throttle bodies. Mmmmmmmm throttle bodies..... Can't wait to see it Saturday!
ericmaxman Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Nick, this is one of my favorite cars around. Yeah, I do like the way you did it. If only someone did it in showroom stock form.........
Randy Kern Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Excellent build there, son! It turned out really nice. Like I said, you know where the goof-ups are, but most people looking at it don't see them. Uh.... you didn't give the photographer credit......
cruz Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Looks good Nick, makes me want to build mine bro, pretty sweet build!!!!!
RodneyBad Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Looks perfect from my house Good looking Honda, decals and paint come out great. Great detailing. Great Job..
Nick F40 Posted October 1, 2008 Author Posted October 1, 2008 Thank you all! I guess I'll have to put up copyrights for the photgrapher... Well done, Nick! Just don't turn your back on V8s and RWD because this came out so nice! What the heck is in the water in New Holland? Team Kern sure churns out some darn fine work! Oh no, I would love to do a V8 Supercar! Ours is filtered..not sure though with all the cows and such...around us Nice decal work. I thought that at first but it kind of changed my mind once I figured out what I kind of did wrong. You still got that Audi to do and I am starting mine You'll definetly see it Saturday and yes, mmmmmmm throttle bodies!
diymirage Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 thats a nice looking car you build there son just one question, why is it running the stock exhaust ? Well done, Nick! Just don't turn your back on V8s and RWD because this came out so nice! What the heck is in the water in New Holland? Team Kern sure churns out some darn fine work! you dont always have to decide between a econobox and a V8 dan, you can always make something fit that focus runs a V8 from a bigfoot monster truck
Nick F40 Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 thats a nice looking car you build there son just one question, why is it running the stock exhaust ? thanks i'm not sure what you mean, this was a racing exhaust, it had a 4-2-1 header then stright pipe to the race muffler because they had noise regulations and that was the requirement.
chris coller Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Gotta tell ya after hearing of your decal struggles, it came out quite well. Congradulations on the finish product.
Nick F40 Posted October 5, 2008 Author Posted October 5, 2008 very nice job! all the little details in these kits come alive with some careful painting. i did a really bad job on the Primera kit, a pretty good job on one of the Skylines and never finished the Volvo 850 or the Toyota EXIV. touring cars are awesome! a tip for the Tamiya kits, or nearly all Japanese kits actually is to take a razor saw and cut the lip off the back of the rims. whenever you turn one over you can see that big fat lip and it looks horrible. if you lay the saw on its side on your bench and rotate the rim as you are cutting they come off really easy with little clean-up work. some of the rims can actually be narrowed some to fit the tires better like the Fujimi Watanabe's with the big-n-little Advans. Dave Thanks, and I WANT the Primera so bad, do you have pics? And I am dying for an 850 and yes Touring cars are awsome. Thanks for the tip, I have known that but never really bothered me but it does kind of look weird. Thanks, now that I notice it, I won't do it to this but i'll probably do it to others. I love those Watanabe's on those Advans gotta love Fujimi and for them including them in the 240Z kit
