Funkychiken Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/140822-revell-jaguar-xk-ss-124-wheel-repair/ see the link above! I fixed these rims last year by stripping them, sanding back, priming several layers, painting, then adding a layer of masking tape before assembly & they still melted again. Does anyone else have this issue with the Jaguar SSK kit? Are there any aftermarket wheels I can buy? I'd buy another kit, but these arent cheap anymore... cheers guys!
Bainford Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 Yes, tires melting wheels is a well documented problem with that kit. I don’t know why this kit is particularly bad. l have heard that some barrier remedies work. The most successful seems to be a layer of BMF between the tire and wheel. Other barriers such as Bin may be helpful as well. The good news is that a nice alternative exists aftermarket. Check out Ukrainian Scale Car Production at uscp-ua.com for a resin Dunlop replacement wheel.
89AKurt Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 I found an Italeri military truck with those evil tires, searched and found two different makes of wheel/tires for them. Never know, if enough people got pissed off about this, should be replacements.
bisc63 Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 I think I would just restore my best wheel, put my best tire on it, and make a silicone mold and cast the entire wheel/tire assembly in resin. Use the black dye to get a nice black resin, and cast plenty; you won't even need to paint the "tire", just mask and paint the wheel your chosen finish. Black resin does a very nice job of mimicking new rubber. Good luck!

I will try BMF, and it that doesn't cut the mustard, then I'll go for the Ukranian wheels - the resin set looks good!
Spex84 Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 I've had good luck gluing wheels into problematic tires with a skim coat of epoxy all over the wheel. That said, I don't think the tires I was using were quite as aggressively plastic-destroying as the ones you're dealing with!
