OldNYJim Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 One of the themes of NNL East this year is Box Art Models, and seeing as Tom Daniel is one of my favorites it seemed fitting to do something of his! I had a bunch of Paddy Wagons sitting around here, so I pulled out An early issue one with the silver chrome to do my version of his original 1960s box art design: Out of interest, I compared the frame of my early kit to one of the later reissues, and whilst the later ones aren’t terrible there’s definitely less clean-up to do on the earlier one: Some Bondo and sanding later.... I’m using a black primer to get the color I want from the Createx paint I’ll be using for this - took a couple of little bits of sanding and smoothing after the first coat was laid down but got it ready for paint eventually: This is the Createx color I picked out - I wanted a dark blue to match the box but also something with a little pop to it to catch the eye...I’ve used this color on some little pieces of other builds before but never a whole lot - excited to see how those big panels look in this shade! And a little paint on the frame - I reduced it a little too much so it pooled a little on this first coat but the second and third coat leveled it out nicely: The engine on the box art is red so I shot some Tamiya chrome silver and a base and then a candy red over that for the first few engine parts - this block will definitely benefit from some detail painting: Next job is to get the multi-part body panels ready for paint...more soon, soon as I’ve done more!
Tom Geiger Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 Wow! You are building a mess of stuff for the show! Anticipating meeting you there!
Modelbuilder Mark Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 Looking really good so far, always a fan of a well built show rod. Do you find the Creatix "gummy" when you clean it out of your brush?

I wanted to do a build for each category, if nothing else...might bring some of my other bits and pieces to display too! 12 hours ago, Modelbuilder Mark said: Looking really good so far, always a fan of a well built show rod. Do you find the Creatix "gummy" when you clean it out of your brush? Thank you sir! There’s no hiding with this one - there’s so few parts you have to make sure they’re all PERFECT! ?. I don’t have to much issue with gummy-ness with the Createx - although I only use their reducer with it. I do notice it doesn’t sand very well unless you let it set up for a week or so - it tends to roll up like a pencil eraser so if you get a blemish to fix it’s often easier to just wash it off with warm water and start again. All that said, I find their stuff super easy to lay down nicely and they have some great colors!
OldNYJim Posted March 12, 2020 Author Posted March 12, 2020 Wow, sure took me a long time to do any more on this one ? Next step, after getting the body parts in paint was the distinctive lettering. I could’ve used kit decals but I wanted to do something a step better than that, so I cut some masks so I could paint them: First up I shot a layer of Tamiya chrome through the airbrush - I wanted a little bit of a scale metalflake look and the grainy finish of this paint will help with that as demonstrated on this spoon I shot at the same time: Then a light coat of Createx candy yellow: And then a little candy Orange to add a little subtle depth and detail: And now I’ve gotta wait patiently an hour or so to let the candies set up (they can be a little gummy and tear if you remove the mask too soon) and we’ll see where we’re at on this one!
OldNYJim Posted March 12, 2020 Author Posted March 12, 2020 Ok, time’s up! Masks off! ? Just a couple of little touch ups that I need to do on the blue and then I can hit these with some clear! More soon!
gotnitro? Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 Gorgeous paint, I've used their Wicked line w reducer and was very impressed

The ‘regular’ ones tend to be easier to find where I am, but I’m sure in time I’ll end up springing for a set once I get bored of the regular colors. Seeing as I’m replying anyway, next job that I’m starting on this thing is the wooden floorboards in the interior. I picked up this woodgrain pattern decal sheet from Gopher Racing and I’ve been looking for a project to use it on - it’s a little cartoon-y looking I think for a ‘serious’ build...so it should fit right in on this one! ? Need to make a bunch more templates now and then get cuttin’ and decalin’: More soon! Edited March 12, 2020 by CabDriver
OldNYJim Posted March 13, 2020 Author Posted March 13, 2020 Another little update - but one I was looking forward to! Got all the templates cut from my Gopher Racing wood grain decal sheet: And got them in place! Pleased with how those look on there! Next job is a coat of clear over the whole lot, soon as they’ve had a day or two to dry. More soon!
Roadrunner Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 Interesting. There are tons of wood grain decals available for WWI aircraft modelers, and I intend to use some on a '29 Ford pickup that I'm currently working on.
Tom Geiger Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 Cool work! Looking forward to seeing it! Betcha you didn’t realize the bed sides on this one are the lower halves of the Paddy Wagon!

You’re right - I did look at those too...I need to start collecting a few of those from the various manufacturers so I have a nice selection to pick from!

Really like your build too Mark - it’s hard to do something original with a kit that they probably made a million of ?. But, you did it! I’ve been thinking of chopping one up and making a little RPU out of one, but I’ve got a pretty full bench right now as it is...

The body sides were cut to form the rear of the body, the roof was narrowed and shortened, the glass is cut acetate sheet.
Nazz Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 Lovin' the Paddy wagon. I've always wanted to build one. Did yours come with the figures?

It did not - I’d like to pick up the version with the figures though...although I have 4 more of these in stock right now so I don’t NEED one ? Got all the parts for this thing in clear and they’re setting up before I polish them, and I picked up some Citadel figure painting paint for the interior color I wanted: And did a little brush painting on the wooden benches to add a little grain to them: And used a little Rub n Buff on the seat brackets and wheel to give them a kind of vintage aged metal look: Almost ready to start doing some assembly on this thing - I’m running out of parts to paint ? More soon!
OldNYJim Posted April 14, 2020 Author Posted April 14, 2020 (edited) A little more progress on this one - got it polished out - wanted to make sure those sides were nice and straight and as perfect as I could get them: And whilst I wait for some more epoxy to arrive so I can get it assembled I messed with an idea I had for a display stand for it: Ive since tidied up the light rope and got it secured all neatly - but I like the effect!
