Jantrix Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 (edited) I've been wanting to build this replica for a while now. This is the Mustang from the B-grade sci-fi film Cherry 2000, starring Melanie Griffith. So I thought I'd give this a try. All in all the AMT 66 Mustang is a pretty lousy kit. So I have substituted the chassis from the AMT 73 Cougar. 3mm was removed from the length in the middle (to match the wheelbase) and about the same from the rear. The rear leaf springs were shortened to match the Mustang and then placed on lifting blocks to raise the ride height. Exhaust is from the Revell Mach III concept car. The gas tank was removed and plated over. The rear wheel wells on the Cougar chassis are oddly shaped (they don't even fit the Cougar well), so they were cut out and replaced. On the body, the rear valence was remade out of sheet plastic and the moon roof was cut out. The wheel wells we enlarged with some sandpaper and a spare piece of PVC pipe. Here's some pics, and a shot of the movie car. I have big plans for this one. The engine will be the Cougars 429 and I'm looking forward to fabricating the bumpers. I may even do a dio-base for it. paul@detaildownunder Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Looks like it off to a great start! Nice
george 53 Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Rob, that chassis hasn't changed since they originally popped that kit, so ANY change would be for the better! You look like you got it down though. It looks real enough to me. You gonna do a Melanie Griffith bounty hunter to go with it? It sure would set it off perfect!
LVZ2881 Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 I saw that movie too, and always thought that car was cool!!! looks like a great build so far!!
scubadiver411 Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 I've seen that movie a bunch of times... I think a great dio would be.... I can't think of just one great one, there are soooo many choices for a dio on this one.... Looking forward to seeing this one done, I've was thinking of doing this same car about 10 years ago (if I was a ford guy) STEVE ALLEN
Jantrix Posted October 20, 2008 Author Posted October 20, 2008 (edited) The chassis and engine are just about done. I tried some new-to-me weathering techniques and I think it turned out well. The engine is a 351C. I'm going to start the front/rear bumpers next, which I'm looking forward to . Without pics of the actual car chassis I had to improvise a bit. In the scenes where the car is dangling from a big magnet a non-running car was used so they weren't good references pics. Edited March 19, 2009 by Jantrix
Jantrix Posted March 19, 2009 Author Posted March 19, 2009 Hey some much needed updates on this project. I have finally completed the paint and acheiving the scorched paint effect I needed. Bumpers and winch are fabed and we are starting to get close to finishing up. A lot of trial and error went into the paint, but I'd say it worked out nicely. I have to finish up the interior, figure out how to do road grime/dust on the windshield/rear glass, final pieces on the front bumper, detail painting and then its time to start final assembly. I hope you like it.
GOTH KUSTOMS Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Nice to see someone finally do this movie car, oh yea I saw the movie too, even orderd it on net flix, great work man,
Jantrix Posted March 22, 2009 Author Posted March 22, 2009 More done. The interior is near done. I'm not trying to faithfully re-create the interior as you don't see a lot of it in the film, but at least capture the feel that this is not your average Mustang. I finished the front bumper and winch. I think it turned out real nice.
Mike Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Cool and well done Rob. I've never even heard of the flick and I watched a lot of bad sci-fi and horror flicks in my youth.
getrdun Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Being new to this I havve to say I love the winch/bumper combo looks kool
MADmodelDOCTOR Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Great idea and really nice work. Hit on the wheel/tire combo and it should be awesome. You might think about trying Dullcote for the windows. later,

dwc43 Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 I'd loose the cats on the exhaust too. I don't think they had them just yet. I think they came out in '78.
