OldNYJim Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 I searched this but fell down a rabbit hole and came out none the wiser... So, I know the common engine in all those Revell Deuce kits is a 5.0 Mustang engine - it says that right on the box. I THINK I know that it’s known as an FE. Im trying to figure out which generation Mustang engine it actually IS - Ford made a lot of Mustangs, and a lot of variations of FE/Small block engines. Im figuring it’s a relatively modern version, at least for when the kit was tooled (mid 90s) but I hate to assume something that someone else probably knows for sure... Bonus points for knowing what the trans is too...thanks fellas!
dodgefever Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 (edited) FE is a big block - completely different engine. The kit has a 5.0 small block: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Windsor_engine Depending on how you dress it up, it could represent almost any small block from the early '60s to the end of production. AFAIK the EFI intake is the type found in a late '80s - early '90s Fox body Mustang. Trans is a Ford AOD 4 spd auto. I'm sure a Ford expert will be along soon to correct me... Expand SEEE, this is why you need someone who knows and not just do a bunch of Googling to see what you turn up - I found at least a couple of places that called this an FE. Throw in the fact that, like you say, this thing could almost represent an engine made from the 60s to the current day and I soon got confused and out of my depth. Thank you so much!!! Really helpful!!
bisc63 Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 Yeah, FE stood for Ford-Edsel, to differentiate its castings from the MEL production engines (Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln)
64Comet404 Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 The engine is a late-model 5.0 but about the only difference is the inlet for the radiator hose on the water pump (passenger side from ‘62 to the late 70’s, driver’s side from that point until 2001). Hope this helps in identification.
Deuces ll Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 Basically the same outer dimensions as a Ford 289 small block....
Dave G. Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 The 5.0 is a 302 Ford and used in many model Fords from 1968 on up. The only iteration different is the Boss 302, also 5.0 but with different heads and wider valve covers. Course there were various induction systems too.The so called or infamous version of the Windsor engine is a 351ci 5.7 engine. This has a taller block deck and very slightly wider head placement so a slightly wider intake. At 1/25 scale it would be hard to tell the difference between a 5.7 and 5.0. Then of course you have your late model engines, Mustang again has a 5.0 in these, different looking engine. The kit has the standard or longest running 5.0 in it as I recall ( the older version). The FE is a completely different animal.
Force Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 302 cui is close to 5.0 litres (4.9489 to be fairly exact) so yes it's the 5.0 from 1982-2001 and it belongs to the Windsor 90 degree V8 family wich also includes the 221-260-289 and 302 and the older engines are very similar with some small differences to the later 5.0 versions. The 351 Windsor is also from the same family but as Dave said it's slightly taller and wider and the only things interchangeable with the smaller displacement engines are the heads, camshaft (different firing order tho') and some other things like oil pump, fuel pump and so forth, the crank can't be used in the smaller versions as the main bearings are wider in the 351. The 351 has the same 4.00" bore as the 289 and 302 and the crank has 3.50" stroke, the 289 has 2.87" and the 302 has 3.00" even so if you could put a 351 crank in a 302 you would get a 347 cui engine, but it doesn't work as I said so the 347 stroker kits available for the 302 takes care of that in other ways with a .040" overbore and a 3.40" crank. For did a couple more 5 litre engines, the Boss 302 from 1969-70 wich is a Windsor 302 with Cleveland style heads and the 5.0 Coyote based on the 2-3 and 4 valve Modular engines from 1991-forward and the new Boss 302 wich also is a Coyote.
