OldNYJim Posted April 27, 2020 Author Posted April 27, 2020 Thanks fellas! Waiting for paint to dry so working on a bunch of tiny little details...flocked the carpet and added some PE pedals - and make a little shiftknob to match the body: (I know it’s an automatic trans - but you gotta be able to shift it into park or drive or whatever, right? So...manual looking shifter ??♂️) I wanted to do some heat-staining on the exhaust once the Molotow has dried enough that I trust it not to smudge, but I also had this little metal crossmember that I made to replace the kit one that I thought would be a fun piece to try out these new metallic water colors that my wife picked up a couple of weeks back: Worked pretty well! More soon!
AmericanMuscleFan Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 It's great Jim! The staining effect looks pretty good to me. I bought some Molotow chrome ink few months ago but I didn't used it yet, it seem more resistant that Alclad, is it really the case? Did you applied the Molotow with an airbrush?

The trick with the Molotow seems to be to give it plenty of time to dry, but still handle it as carefully as possible when you’re done. I airbrush mine but it’s a slightly different technique to Alclad if you’re used to using that...rather than misting JUST ENOUGH on like you do with Alclad this stuff seems to work best if you apply it liberally, as though shooting a wet coat of clear. Unlike the Alclad you don’t need a gloss black base, but I’ll usually shoot one anyway so I can spot any flaws in the surface easily before proceeding to the next step. I need to try Alclad chrome again too - I haven’t used any since I started using this stuff but I’d like to compare them again now my skills have improved...
AmericanMuscleFan Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Thanks for the advices on the Molotow Jim! I was already aware that Molotow might be applied generously but I now have the confirmation from your experience. Glad to know that we can apply some protective clear coat on top. Alclad is still a good product but it must be handled with care (worn out easily). Thanks, Francis
OldNYJim Posted May 2, 2020 Author Posted May 2, 2020 Not made a bunch of progress on this - got distracted by a 29 kit...but started polishing out the body a little: I think the clear’s still a little soft, even my softest polishing cloths are putting micro scratches in it as I’m trying to put the final sheen on it - guess this Testor’s enamel needs more than a week to really be ready to polish but it’s shinier than it was this morning anyway!
AmericanMuscleFan Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 Looks great Jim! I did uses Testor (Modelmaster) Lacquer as gloss coat for some of my models and I usually wait at least a week before polishing so it might need more time for their enamel version to harden enough to achieve the best possible result. At this stage we must convince yourself to be patient and don't rush and ruin a perfect paint job. The reflexion of the dollar bill on the body of your model car talk by itself my freind! Slow and steady win the race!!!

Slow and steady win the race!!! Absolutely right! Why rush...when it’s finished you don’t get to build it anymore anyway ??♂️ I’m fairly new to the Testors enamels but I’m really pleased with them...I’m finally getting closer to the results I’ve always wanted but never managed to achieve with lacquer and acrylic clears. Other people get amazing results with them, but I never quite got them as nice as I do wanted - I’ve always wished I could get that miles-deep shine! The previous two builds I’ve done I let sit for 3 weeks before polishing and I think that’s going to be about the magic number for me...but I figured I’d try doing one sooner and see what happened! That layer of paint under the top layer is definitely not quite ready for a final buff yet, so lesson learned...but it came out pretty shiny anyway! Very forgiving - can’t wait to try buffing it some more in a couple or three weeks!
OldNYJim Posted May 7, 2020 Author Posted May 7, 2020 (edited) Still waiting until I dare polish the body some more...but got some work done on the frame this past couple of days. Made some simple coilovers to replace the kit‘s plastic parts: These aren’t as nice as a set made on a lathe...but I don’t have a lathe ?♂️?. They look cool on there though, definitely an improvement over the kit pieces I think: Plumbed the front and rear brakes: And had to shorten the driveshaft a few scale inches to account for the longer trans on the new engine...this one wasn’t going to work: And everything else was a case of sticking everything together until I ended up with this: And we got a roller! It’s gonna look cool I think! Racecar-y! I can’t decide if I want a chrome insert for the grille or if I should shoot it black...any opinions anyone? More soon, soon as I’ve done more! For the grille, the chrome is a classic and the details on it will be more visible but both options would fit perfectly with your concept... I'm not helpful...LOL

I'm not helpful...LOL Funnily enough I posted a poll on my Instagram and got an exact 50/50 split...I ended up going with a black wash on the chrome grill and calling it a win for both sides ? Let the body sit for another week or so before masking up ready to paint the fabric roof insert on the body: Looks good I think! Next one I do I’ll sand that smooth so I get a nice big panel of that pearl orange, but I like the look on this one anyway: Spent some time polishing the other little bits and pieces too - the grill shell, firewall and inner arches and so on...here’s the deck lid in progress: Love that color! Then, with all that done got the glass installed: It’s starting to look like a thing! ? Getting close to final assembly time, but I’m cautious to do any more today whilst the glue for the glass is still setting up...so more on this one soon!
AmericanMuscleFan Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 WOW! That's very beautiful Jim. Your final choice for the front grille is superb and this car looks amazing! A real Saturday Night cruiser!
OldNYJim Posted May 16, 2020 Author Posted May 16, 2020 Thanks fellas! Apart from some little touch-ups and a polish this one is about done I think:
AmericanMuscleFan Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 Superb job Jim! Put it under a clear show case to protect it from dust and it will be ready for the next model car contest. Well done sir!!! Are you going to entertain us with a new project since it is almost finished?
