Does anyone know if the Buick 350 ever used a center sump oil pan? I am trying to correct the visual differences between the 430 and the 350. The valve covers are the most obvious, but I am not sure if I need a new pan also?

I switched between 350 and 455 on my '73 Centurion and didn't have to change the pan.

The 350 was out of a '70 Skylark so whatever the shape is of the one on the Monogram GSX kit should be correct. Rear sump,IIRC [???]

I suspect the pan on the Riviera is mid sump to accommodate the shape of the unique Riviera frame which was designed for a nailhead originally.

The 430 in the ‘69 AMT Riviera kit is a mid sump as were the nailheads. I would like to use the 430 pan as a 350 pan, as it would save me some work....but if the 350 never used a center sump then I should Probably fab one up?

Honestly, I'd just use the 430 pan if you want. %99 of people won't know the difference.

But if it really bugs you , maybe you could find one from something else that's close and modify that. Easier than modding the 430 pan, probably.

Both of these pans are shown as OEM replacements for the 400-430-455, depending on application.

This one is listed as being for the '67-'70 Riv. "and other center sump applications" (possibly Electra and Wildcat)...

V8 Deep Sump & Original Oil Pans, 400-430-455 Reproduction Center ...

...and this one for '69-'76 Skylark and full-size:

Oil Pan 1969-76 Buick 400 430 455, CARS (908) 369-3666

There doesn't appear to be a lot of aftermarket support for the 350, and the only pan I've found so far looks like this, listed for '68-'77 Skylark, Century and Regal.

VERY-GOOD-1968-1969-1970-1971-1977-BUICK-GS-350-OIL-PAN-SKYLARK-CENTURY-REGAL

EDIT:  Typical problem with online sourcing this stuff is that suppliers disagree on exact fitment, but they all agree these are the two 400-439-455 pans.

And the nailhead shares absolutely nothing with these engines other than the nominal bore-centers.

Bill, the reason for the center sump pans differing on the Rivieras is to accommodate the X-frame , possibly to clear the steering center link, I'm not sure right now. By the time that generation engine came out, the only Buick using the x-frame was the Riviera. All other Buicks had conventional perimeter frames and would use the rear sump shown.

Aha. Thanks for the clarification. Makes sense now in light of the fact that the early Riv ran a nailhead.

Thanks Guys! I will attempt to fix it a bit more, even though no one other than Folks on here will know the difference. I’ve already plugged the hole through the sides of it and the block.?

Was the Buick "Star Wars" air cleaner piece found in '67 and '68 annual AMT Rivieras? It was shown on the '68 Riviera instruction sheet:

I don’t know, but it is in the AMT ‘69 Riviera kit, and it only shows one piece, not the three pieces shown above.

Thanks. That looks a bit disappointing in the flesh-- too short and stubby overall, compared to the real thing:

Yeah, the intake scoops are a little short, and it would be nice if there was a bottom half to it.?
