hedotwo Posted October 22, 2020 Posted October 22, 2020 I bought a partial (lacking the passenger side inner fender) Toronado kit from ebay a while ago and finally got around to looking at it. To my surprise the body, hood, dash and steering wheel are "normal" off white while the remainder of the included parts are black. I haven't done a complete inventory but all the major pieces are accounted for. There are no manufacturer stamps on anything that I can see. I know MPC, AMT and Johan made Toronado kits, but I thought I also read Palmer did too? What kind of a mutt kit do I have here?
Mark Posted October 22, 2020 Posted October 22, 2020 I think you have an original body, with the interior/chassis/engine (black parts) from a Jo-Han USA Oldies reissue 1970 kit.

Mark Posted October 22, 2020 Posted October 22, 2020 The bumpers might provide a clue...pretty certain the MPC rear bumper has a dated license plate while the Jo-Han bumper has a Toronado script. Too, if the holes in the interior tabs line up with the posts on the inside of the body, again it's probably Jo-Han/AMT. I do have both '67 kits but never bothered to compare things like that since both are complete.
Mark Posted October 22, 2020 Posted October 22, 2020 Too, there's a glue mark from an inner fender on that body...I'd bet it's Jo-Han/AMT. The MPC kit had the inner fenders molded as one piece with the firewall and radiator bulkhead, so it wouldn't be attached like that.

The MPC kits had separate front cornering lights with holes for them in the front fenders and the inner fenders/firewall/rad wall were all one peice.
hedotwo Posted October 23, 2020 Author Posted October 23, 2020 (edited) The rear bumper has the Toronado script. My book doesn't show a Johan 67 Toronado but does list the 70. If the parts are from the 70 kit I'm hoping they'll work with the 67 body. I didn't have to pay much for this builder so not having everything matching perfectly is ok with me on this one. Oh, and I do have the remaining parts. I just didn't include them in the pic I posted. Other than the passenger front inner fender. Hopefully I'll be able to find that one. The JoHan Toro chassis, engine and all underhood parts were the same through the whole run. The '70 is the easiest to find but any from '66 through '72 be exactly the same. [JoHan did the annual Toro every year from '66 to '72.] ALSO, the JoHan Cadillac Eldorado kits used those same parts with the only difference is they put "CADILLAC" script on the valve covers of the Olds engine. So, if you happen to run across one, those parts will be the same too. Edited October 23, 2020 by Can-Con
Mark Posted October 23, 2020 Posted October 23, 2020 Jo-Han did manufacture a '67 Toronado kit, but it was sold by AMT in AMT packaging. AMT also sold the '68 kit. MPC had the promo model contract for '67 so the Jo-Han/AMT kit is off in a couple of details compared to the MPC.

Vince Nemanic Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 It is the Jo Han tool for sure. I can't tell for sure from the picture, but there was an indention at the top of the headlight doors on the '66 while the '67 headlight doors were flush. The '67 was marketed by AMT.
