Brian Nehring Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 (edited) I finally opened up the new Nova I bought a couple of months ago. I thought it would be a perfect subject to practice some true fire on. The black base is House of Kolor and the flame colors are from the Sherwin Williams Planet Color line. This is my first attempt at painting a model in this style of flames. I stil have some tweaking to do on my technique but just like I taught myself to paint traditional hot rod style flames, it just takes practice. I still have to clear it, will probably do that later on tonight. Brian Edited November 22, 2008 by Brian Nehring
juergen Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 hi !!! the flames look´s absolutly great !!!!!! greets jürgen
outlaw035 Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 brian they look really good...wish some1 would to a how to....neal
Bernard Kron Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 Really tasty. Suits the stance and lines of the car just right.
cruz Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 WOW!!!! I love it, Question, did you shoot those flames on top of that orange peeled paint? Not critizicing here, only that it will be easier to wetsand and polish your clearcoat at the end without any orange peel on your basecoat, that is if you are clearcoating this thing. Other than that, I think the flames look magnificent, I will have to try them one day. How did you go about doing them??? Great idea too!!!
cruz Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 I am sorry, like a dummy, I didn't see that you wrote that you will be clearcoating it. I have seen your builds before and I think this thing will turn out cool!!!!
Modellpularn Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 Wow Brian, you're the flame master, no doubt about it!! Seems like you got the technique down right away, no wonder...... Keep up the good work!
Geezerman Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 (edited) Looks great! practice will only improve. I've tried this myself, but my problem is that I'm so steeped in traditional flame 'licks', I can't keep them out of my attempts. This Tru Fire technique has to be planned randomness. Mike Lavalle, pioneer of this style, has it down pat. BTW, those are great wheels on right side of that Nova! Edited November 17, 2008 by Geezerman
made007 Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 looks fantastic, im waiting on my airbrush hose to arrive to start using it, i wish i have skils like that
gasdriverca Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 No complaints there!!!I like the real fire effect, once thats sealed in with and polished it'll look better.
BKIN10SECS Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 Looks like real fire to me.....I know this is an early stage pic.....gonna look HOT when done....great job!

Rudy Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 I wish my first attempt at ANYTHING looked that good! Rudy
RadRidesByDan Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 This was my first attempt at real fire and I dont think that I come even close to your paint job. Impressive
gilsdropshop1 Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 great job the flamesl ook greattttttttttttttt!
airbrush addict Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 True fire isn't easy at this scale.. You nailed it.. Can't wait to see it cleared.
Brian Nehring Posted November 19, 2008 Author Posted November 19, 2008 Just wanted to say thanks to you all, after I got done shooting the flames I'd looked at it for so long I couldn't tell if they were convincing enough. They are still not quite the way I want them so you can bet I'll be shooting another model real soon and with more flames covering the body. Thanks again for all the compliments, I really appreciate it. Brian Nehring
Peter Lombardo Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 Brian, you may have a real future in painting flames on model cars.....Oh, that's right, you do! Great job, first time out, it can only get better. I don't see how, but I'm sure it will.
ddonaca351 Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 They look REALLLYYY good. (espitially since it's your first try!!!!!) wow! Just like in 1:1, work from dark to light. You can also add depth with a layer of purple or blue pearl on the early layers, and then some silver or gold over the yellows and whites later on... if you like. As with all flames, it's a personal taste thing... They look great. Dave-
Brian Nehring Posted November 22, 2008 Author Posted November 22, 2008 Got the clear shot on the Nova the other day. Brian
VW Dave Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Horrible, simply horrible.....I say send it to me for 'proper disposal.' Seriously? There's no doubt in my mind who is the 'flame king.'
george 53 Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Brian, I know I may be askin ALOT from you, But do you think you could show us HOW you did it? Theres a coulpa guys who can paint those kinda flames, but I sure cant, and I LOVE flames! Maybe, you could even write an article for the Mag on how it's done. I for one would really like to know how it's done, caz I haven't the slightest idea on where to start. And I've NEVER seen an article on how it's done, or at least I don't remember seein one.( but then again, I ain't as sharp as I usedta be)
