I have an AMT annual built up 67 fastback mustang that needs a number of parts for me to begin restoration.  Rather than trying to locate the individual parts (which I'm fine with doing) I was wondering if the latest Round 2 release of the 67 fastback would be a source for these pieces.  I don't know the history of the original release kit and later releases.

The 1/25th 1967 and 1968 original Amt Mustang fastback kit parts interchange. These were retooled into kits from the promo molds. The 1968 AMT Mustang kit became the AMT 1968 Shelby Gt500  kit. This 1968 Shelby is still out in some Michaels and Hobby Lobby stores. This is the kit for Restoring pieces-Glass etc. Look on the bottom of this kit to see if it has the paRTS YOU NEED! Just no stock side lovers or stock bumpers The 1990's issue ( the one out now!)of the 1967 Mustang and Shelby GT 350 Mustang ( molded in white and black plastic)were new completely tooled molds. They had  better chassis detail > The bodies were copied down from a Wen-Mac (1/10 or 1/12) battery operated Ford Promo Large scale!( this explains the removable trunk and the  separate /different interior pieces). The chassis was copied down from the Revell 1/12 scale 1965 ford  mustang GT/ Shelby GT350.So the question is ,are you going to build it as a original kit or  a superdetailed kit- bash better than original?

Just going to try and re-build as stock as I can and am not concerned with better detailing on the underside.  It was built (cleanly) as a mild custom with the custom rear end pieces and cammer engine.  Otherwise, it's just missing some pieces to build it stock.  I can post in the Wanted section and see if I can find anything.  The major problem I think is the stock rear end pieces and side louvers.  Was hoping the new release R2 Fastback would interchange with my annual.

Thank you Paul

If it's cleanly built (and painted), I'd probably clean it up, fix anything broken or missing, see if the paint will take a polish, add minor improvements it needed (such as chrome window trim), and display it proudly as a "survivor." And then go buy and build a "new" AMT '67 Mustang, which is a much better kit.

I have two original annual AMT '66 Mustang fastbacks built as mild customs that I did exactly this to, and I couldn't be happier with them. If I'd tried to convert them back to factory stock, I'd have just ruined them IMHO.

Each to his own I guess.  It is a fairly clean build (came apart nicely) that I could leave as it, but my enjoyment come from the restoration to as stock as they came in the kit, unless it's a build that is just so rare as to have to wait forever to source correct parts.  Even though parts from a newer kit that interchange with an older one is kind of cheating, I'm ok with that.  I have a pile of these projects in the wings and you could say the hunt for parts is part of the challenge.  I haven't built a kit from a box in years and I'm ok with that.

Thanks Snake

As Snake45 mentioned the chassis from the AMT 68 GT500 would have whatever you need.  As for the louvers, I would try the ones from the newer 67 AMT fastback kit as finding original ones would be difficult.  I took and original 67 fastback with a warped front end and grafted the newer front clip and it lined up pretty well.  It’s pretty much a trail an error process as original parts are not worth collector prices to me unless they are very unique such as the clear hood for the 68 MPC fastback.  I have posted pictures before so if you use the search function you should be able to find some old posts.

Here’s a MPC glue bomb I am rescuing along with the AMT body I mentioned with the later issues front flip and rear panel added. Since I want to make something that resembles the Autolite I paid dearly for a MPC clear hood and figure I can probably change anything else I need from whatever parts I have to make the record breaking Salt Flat car.  That wild engine is going to be fun recreating.

I'm beginning to lean this way if I can't source the parts
