CB Posted January 30, 2009 Author Posted January 30, 2009 Keep it rollin Bro T'anks Led. It be rollin' along superfine .... ....just got done sprayin' SKWIRLY's cab with his first coat o' primer.... He looks like Darth Vader!! mo pics coming asap
CB Posted January 30, 2009 Author Posted January 30, 2009 All the snow & ice has got me cooped up with ol' SKWIRLY ! Kinda good in a way.......if I survives it Been bracing up his frame some, so's he don't fall apart when he jumps on it. Added a shifter housing to the transaxle, cut from the axle end. Closed in the wheel wells, and fabbed some body mounts. Trimmed the 'sheet metal' on hims bed. Found some 'barbed wire' and worked up Led's ideer for SKWIRLY's emblem (T'anks bro ). Found the chain, and it was all over . Started slappin' the ol' boy around with bunches of putties of various repute. While the snow & iceys keepd comin' down, got cozy warm just sandin' & sandin' & sandin' dat putty. Finally grabbed ol' SKIWLRY and some flap black laquer primer, shot 'im up, and....... YIKES! HIM LOOKIN' SCAREY!!!!
Dr. Cranky Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 BRAVO!!! Great scratch-building, and it's getting yet a step closer to taking on some paint. Love it in primer! You are making great progress, chap!!! This is a highly entertaining and smile inducing build!!! Cheers.
juergen Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 hi !!! i love your absolut great scratch building. good to see the detail fotos from your built to learn about this. greets jürgen
E St. Kruiser50 Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 WOW!! Your SKILLS, TALENT, and IMAGINATION are amazing. This forum is so lucky to have builder's like you and "Cranky", and Peter Lombardo, Raul Perez, and just a host of other incredily talanted and gifted "Model Artists". I love the support and encouragement here too, and the chance for all of us to share our passions - pretty cool keep up the great work. Another insanely incredible build - Love the art work too all the best - dave
Scott Colmer Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 OK this is FUN! Look forward to seeing more. The story is well done too. Reminds me of the Deals Wheels instructions. Great stuff! Great model! Scott
atenzapower Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 This is fantastic,i love those weirdos. can t wait.
CB Posted January 31, 2009 Author Posted January 31, 2009 Just gotta say THANKS to everyone for the comments and encouragements . God bless all ya'll fer dat, coz it aint easy dealin' with ol' SKWIRLY at times, even tho it does seem to be workin' out alright if'n I just do what HE says !!! Nice to know I'm among friends here---Thanks again---means a lot Oaky doaky, I did some mocking up the other day, trying to get an idea of balance established with MR SKWIRLY, and his big blown VW 4banger: On the left is a photo of the model with a heavy paper cutout of ol' Skwirly all duded up that I stuffed down in the hole in the cab. I also used the same heavy paper to 'box' up the engine block and stuck the top of a 2 litre bottle on for the bellhousing thing. I removed the background from the picture so's I could concentrate on the dude and the engine. As I suspected when I did the mockup, the dude and the engine looked too big--even tho' it is in the old 'Weird-Ohs' style it do gotta have some sense of proportions. With the computer I was able to 'remove' the SKWIRLY dude from the cab and scale him down a bit, as you can see on the right. I did some 'painting' as well. Looks like I'm goin' with a red frame--unless SKWIRLY says differnt. Still no clue what colors for the body--- I suppose I'll hear ol' SKWIRLY talkin sometime about that . Gotta do more work on that 4banger on the computer--get it sized up right. Can't wait to start cuttin' & gluing so's I can be inhaling vast quantities of styrene dust and toulene . Later all, and t'anks again
juergen Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 hi !!!!!!!!!!!!!! without words - only greets jürgen
CB Posted February 3, 2009 Author Posted February 3, 2009 Here we are again....... ...started off this morning by giving ol' SLKWIRLY a good sanding and then tried to give him a bath. No, them aint his brains, or maggots in his cab........it's rice to dry up the water from his swimmin' in the sink. Once he dried up a bit, I put some new, good, green putty all over him, and his big fat rear end, and.......... even slopped some on his big fat meats, just for kicks. The innerds will be showin' a bit andyhows, so.........figgered I might as well. Finally able to turn my tension to the go box fer the back---dat VW 4bangin' thing. Started by welding a big hunka 'iron' to the back of the frame..... (I aint gots a clue at times what I's doing here--I just waits to hear from ol' SKWIRLY ) so, anyhows, I did resize the engine smaller and looked for just the right size & shape hunka styrene fer the bell housey. Anyboody care to guess where'm it comed from? If'n you been followin' along, they be some clues somewheres back in the preceding pages. Whacked out a couple big discs fer the mounting flange and sliced some thin strips (and my finger ) fer the reinforcing ribs, and couldn't stop there! so I cut & fit the ring to mate the housing to the transaxle tube. And here be the start of the 'block' fer them 4bangin pistons & cranky shaft. Next up, I'll be drillin holes fer them cylinders, and mebbe a few other holes as well--- Oh boy, I's gettin' excited ..............I think
Manic Mechanic Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 So thats where my 2 liter bottle housey thingie went.....
CB Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 CAUTION! -MAX PHOTO POST aaaahhhh......... ..... .....styrene, toulene, xacto knifey, drilly press, sandy belt, baby Ol' SSKWIRLLY aint saysin' much at the moment, coz he be seein I be in another world.......and I even leaved him upstairs whilst I went down to the machinen room where all the power tools live Started by laying out centers for the cylinders in the 'block' 'Drilled' some starting holes for the 'milling' drilling machine and cranked out them cylinder holes........aaahhhhh. Aaaaahhhhhhhhh............shavings. Mating block to belle. Looks like a goodly couple. I'd like to make a 'point' here, and reinforce.......uh, something. Aaaaahhhhh.......progeresso! 4 Sharpies later, Ol' SKWIRLY is closer to pistons and all them other moving parts. Cut each 'cylinder' from a Sharpie cap and stuck in the 'block' for a mocken up. Bad part is, I gots to now make fins fer each of them cylinders. But, I be diggin it. Ol' SKIWRLY in a rare, all skins down posture showin him posterior. Gonna have to consider mebbe puttin a skid plate under his oily pan. Mebbe a hunka diamond plate with wheels? Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh..............aaahhhhh. Spended most of this morning session sanding all that green putties down. I likes dat stuff! Hope to get some primer on both his body parts. Don't know if'n I'll be using that flap black primer, coz it make ol SKIRAWLY look awfully scary.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I love the fact that the totally INSANE hang out on this forum! That is SO SO SO COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLL!!!!
ajulia Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Hello there friend! I have to agree this build is off the meters man Keep it coming amigo!!! peace Tito
CB Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 Howdy do everbodies! Woked up a bit sore after bouncing around the beginner slope on a snowboard yesterdays. Don't rememebers hittin' my head, but sure did slam my butt down hard quite a few times . As usual, Ol' SKWIRLY din't wanna hear nuthin' from me--just tol' me to get busy, so.......... Procured these wee tiny li'l brass bolts from my LHS just 'tother day fer SKWILRY and spent this morning's session drilling mounting holes. These li'l bolts are only 3/8" LONG, so do de math --they's way hard to thread a nut onto........but ol' SKEWIRLY keeps a close eye on me, so....... I finds a way . Actually startin' to look like somethin'................it'll look lots better when I gets some paint on it. Ol' SWRIKLY says it feels purty good with some weight back there fer a change.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Man, that's looking great! Keep it going. Wonderful.
Raul_Perez Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Wow, John!! That is really becoming one WILD looking ride!!
E St. Kruiser50 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 OK OK OK This is just INSANELY COOOOL. I feel like a beginner when I look at what you and "CRANKY" build. You guy's are on another planet . Ol' George said I was runnin' on 10 cylinder's, tryin' to be nice , but you two are runnin on all "16 Cylinders". I don't know how to even think the way you guy's do - LOL. Anyhow, way too cooool build and I'ma still watchin' - dave
CB Posted February 8, 2009 Author Posted February 8, 2009 CB I owe ya one I saw dat ya done went an updated, sos I click it an whats the 1st ting dat pops onto my 'puter screen? The pic above of Ol Skwirlys' Eye starin at me and dem menacin chompers just waitin on some fresh meat. Bro He actauly Scarred me, I almost bangded me heads agin He lookin nice and mean bro, keeper rollin Sorry Led! Been ruff couple days with the SKEIWIRL ......he done got me way wahked out sniffin some bad gluem ups, and 'fore I knowed it, he signed us on and posted his ownself up . gots lots o pix ready fer loadin, but gottsa wait til tomorrows to dump em at the liberry, coz they gots dat ol turbocharged inkernet
CB Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 Guten tag, everones been couple ruff days with the SKWIRLY one.....I mean 2! He tricked me into usin' some dat superduper glue, and I done sniffed waaay too much of it.........and got meself perty sickly........well, physically anyhows . So anyhows here's what we been accomplishin': Figured I'd best get them inner fender shrouds bolted in, before they felled off. Had to use some pretty small bolts to do so, and found some at the LHS. Aint they just the cutest li'l things! ...aw So now, we's good to go. Talk about a 'tub' Had some them li'l bolts left over, so........twas only naturl to use 'em to screw tham skinnies onto the front ax. Now I hopes ya'll realizes this aint actual size, coz dem would be some really big tweezers! Yep, them li'l darlins was a naturl fer screwin' into them hubs. Aint dat purty?! Li'l dab of the superduper headachey stuff, & them bolts aint goin' nowhere man. While layin' there with an icepack on me head, I done remembered about how I gonna be puttin' ol' SLKWARLS together after paint & @, and I sure am glad ol' SKWIRLys had me bolt his big bad 4banger on. Superdupered the bolts to the block and enlarged the holes in the frame, and we's cool. Data way we's can always display SKWIRLS with or without him engine. Finally! I can inhale somethin' other than superduper glue and putty. Das frame ready fer squuirtin'. And squirtin' I done did. Thinkin' of paintin das frame red, so this here kinda satin stuff'll be a goodly base---or just might leave it as it is. Splashed some black on dem slicks, and things're lookin' perty goodly.
george 53 Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Naw, paint the chassis, youse won't be happy if ya don't! Dontcha think if it waz YER behind all hangin out like that,You'd want it ta be lookin purty? SQII is lookin like he's got some idea of what he wants done! Jus keep onna rollin!
CB Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 Well, ol' SKEWIRLY seem to know what time of year it am.........and he be talkin' Valentiny talk at me, and got me to cover 'im with chocolate Actually, I aint havin' much luck with the rattlecans. Tried to cover 'im up with some gray primer, but it just started spittin' on the ol' boy. I really didn't mind dat part so much, coz we aint been gettin' along so famously, but.... tweren't much good fer gettin' a finish on 'im, so's hadta shoot some Krylon brown stuffs on 'im. I's gettin' tired of havin' to get up every morning and give ol' SKEWIRLSY a mudpack. Putty 'im up, and sand 'im, putty up, sand, putty up, sand.........yer makin' me sick SKEWEIRLY! all dem off gassin's---WHEW! Did another test fit of the 4banger, & hadta enlarge them holes a bit-- basically just clean the paint outa the holes. Yeah, they's a cylinder in there... we's gettin to dat....... Just like the real SKWIRLY ( There's a REAL SKWIRLY???) gonna havta snug the engine up to the frame coz them bolts are off just a bit. Well within the tolerances though. 'Tolerances'---yeah, I can only tolerates ol' SLKEWIRLY's stuff so much! So here we is violating the 10 photo per post rule.......I means, with a mini tutorial on scratching cylinder fins. Cut 'em outa a 'FOR SALE' sign, making 'em each a li'l bit bigger or larger than the others, dependin on where I felt like positioning 'em on the 'cylinder'. A scratched cylinder in the hand is better than 2 or 3 in a bush............? Shut up SKWIRLY. Yeah, here's them 'fins' hangin out on the 'cylinder' in their positions, and ready for.......... GLLUE! had to resort to the ModelMasters glue, coz the superduper stuff was bout to shrivel me eyeballs up. This here's the culprit--the superdupered cylinder that ol' SKEIWIRLY just bout put me inna hospital with. 2 down, and 2 to go. Ya'll notice that ol' SKWEARLS aint worried none about symmetry, or parts all lookin' the same. Longs as they's parts here and there, and they does a reasonable job, he's happy. He can run 4 cylinders, or 3..........don't matter to him, long as he can get them li'l skinnies up off'n the ground.
george 53 Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 OK Cap'n Howya growin the shrooms? You gotta be on SOMETHING to start buildin up some cylindros por your motor! You even usin screws? Are you sure they ain't summa yourn? Jus don't get too freaky or you's gunna end up inna book o' world records, Heineken? Guiness? You knows what I'm talkin bout, Willis!
Raul_Perez Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 John, It must be that oxygen poor environment out there on Mars that's giving you so much trouble with outgassing. Without the correct atmospheric pressure to keep all of those nasty little microscopic atoms of gas from wanting to escape the top later of your paint, you'll be popping air bubbles in Skwirly's topcoat like a teenager with a bad case of acne for a long time to come! On the lighter side, it looks like old Skwirly is finally starting to see things your way!! Later,
