Need some answers from those far more knowledgeable than me!

I want to build a replica of a car we had when I was a toddler. I'm looking for more photos now. I know we have some, just need to track them down.

Yes, that is me in the pics.

I believe this is a base model 1970 Ford Torino.

Can anyone verify the year based on these pics? I'm thinking that it's a 1970, purely because of the grille and headlight setup, but I could be wrong.

If so, what would be the best kit to use as a base? I know there are options from Revell and AMT for both Torino GT and Torino Cobras. Obviously, would need to make some modifications to turn it into a base trim level.

Thanks!

That model of Torino has the same roof as the MPC 70/71 Mercury Montego kit.  You could combine the Revell Torino and MPC Montego to get the correct body. (R2 Allison NASCAR kit was out recently) At one time the body was offered in resin as a number of NASCAR team liked it better than the 'fastback' Revell kit. Good luck!

I have been thinking about this same body style, as my family had one from 1970-77.

You've got your work cut out for you.  The AMT Torino Cobra is a 1969, totally different body though much of the chassis and suspension are similar.

The Revell '70 GT is the best starting point, though you will also need a '70 Cobra and an MPC Cyclone stock car.  GT has the grille, Cobra has the hood and taillights, Cyclone has the upper body (roof and deck lid area).  Hood will still need a hole filled, grille and taillight panel will need work also.  And that's not getting into the interior!

That grille, the base model non-GT version isn't in either of the Revell kits. The Cobra has the Cobra specific grille and the GT has the hide-away headlight grille. The tail lights will be the ones from the Cobra, the squares not the honeycomb panel. I would probably start with the Cobra kit when it gets reissued later this year or most likely next, it has the tail lights and a hood closer to what you need.

Motor City Resin used to make a '70 Torino transkit with the body, hood and interior door panels. I just checked the website and it says they're "coming back soon" but who knows.

The grille could be made pretty easily from the GT grille. Just make 4 holes in the right place for the headlights, rim them with some thin sheet and add lenses.
