stevez Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 The hot weather is great for wet coats of Tamiya light sand metallic. To clear or not to clear? I wet sanded between coats with 4000 and higher, then used novus 1 clean and shine, and a little final detail wax applied with moist cloth. If I go with clear coat, will the wax repel it? Interior will be Tamiya flat sand (non metallic), I think, or maybe white seats and doors. 1
TarheelRick Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 I don't know why you would want to clear it; it looks like a factory paint job now. I believe the wax would probably cause more problems than you would want to deal with. Of course, I am just guessing. Some others with much more experience can give you a better response.
Plowboy Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 The wax will definitely cause an issue with the clear coat. You should be able to strip the wax off with Windex. I would go over it with Dawn dishwashing liquid afterwards. Spray three coats of TS-13, sand smooth and polish. I highly recommend using the Tamiya compounds (Course, Fine and Finish). They'll change your life!
ModelcarJR Posted August 6, 2022 Posted August 6, 2022 The paint looks really nice! The only reason I use a clear coat is to get a really smooth finish for BMF and to protect the paint from scuffs and scratches that usually happen during the assembly process. Of course, it won't completely protect it but it helps. I'm not sure what wax you used and am unfamiliar with Novus. I always use Meguiars Scratch -X for rubbing out and their waxes all of which are paintable and sandable. Metallic paint by its nature will have an uneven surface and your foil my have a crinkled look even after rubbing it out. I would apply a clear coat and rub it out to help avoid that and protect the paint.
mrm Posted August 6, 2022 Posted August 6, 2022 In my opinion clear coat is just a must every time, no matter what. Unless you are painting something like a rat rod and you want that flat finish. For many reasons. It will definitely provide better finish. It will protect it in more ways than one. It will provide better surface for foil and decals. It will save your build big time if any mishaps happen etc. etc.
