I am working on the 1/32nd scale AMT 1966 Mustang. The kit has 2 piece plastic tires. I'd like to see if anyone has any sources for 1/32nd scale tires with the thin whitewalls that were used on these cars?

I can find lots of 1/32 scale slot car tires, but none have whitewalls on them.

I am going to try to paint whitewalls on these tires using a circle template and a white Gelly Roll pen. I have used this technique on 1/25th scale tries, but I don't know how successful I will be with these smaller ties.

Thanks,

Bart

i wouldn't use the circle templates or gelly roll pens as the gelly pens can leave ugly ridges in the whitewall if you have to overlap. Theres a much easier way that gives a nice finish. All you need is a large washer with a hole the size you need for the whitewalls. Just place the washer over the tyre, taking care to centre it, then build up the colour using white acrylic primer. if you use a reasonably heavy washer it will stay in place for painting. I find heavy truck washers to be the best as the holes are about the right size and they have the weight to not blow away and since its being sprayed the finish will be smoother

Sounds great for wide white walls, but he asked about the thin/narrow white walls. I don't think your method would work without an inner washer too.

That sounds like a good alternative.

I might try that myself, although a good fool proof method to get them centered exactly might be something to investigate.

I've used the template and gelpen method on 1/25 vinyl tyres before now with very good results. Takes practice mind. I don't see why it wouldn't work on 1/32 provided you have the right surface to draw on. I assume you'll be painting the tyre, and I think you'd be ok with a semi matt or matt finish.

I used to put the thin red or white sidewalls on 1/ 24 scale tires using a semi truck rim.

Maybe find a 24th scale rim or even a bottle cap close in size paint some acrylllic white on a piece of cardboard dip the rim in it then press onto and remove from tire.

Best of all if you're not happy it washes off with water.

Here's the best solution that I came up with to add whitewalls to the black plastic tires on my 1/32nd scale 1965 Mustang. A trip to the R/C section of my Hobby Store helped me find #4 machine screws, washers, and nuts. The picture shows how I secured a washer on the tire. A Gelly Roll pen was used along the edge of the washer. After everything was dry, a couple of coats of semi-gloss clear were added to provide some protection to the white ink from the pen. I think they turned out pretty good.

Thanks,

Bart

That looks amazing

I've been using an olfa circle cutter and stick on mailing labels to make mine. Theres a video on YouTube. This is my 1/32 Honda N360 so the tires are tiny

Thanks! Your tires also look good!

My daughter has a Cricut cuttter. I am thinking that taking a sheet of their white vinyl and creating lots of whitewalls in various widths and scales might be something I may try to see how they look.
