Monty Posted September 13, 2022 Posted September 13, 2022 Apparently my Google skills have fallen off considerably, as I can't seem to find a definitive answer. If they are, what is the best way to replicate this? Is there a metalizer-type paint that comes close?
Oldcarfan27 Posted September 13, 2022 Posted September 13, 2022 I thought, technically, that all gas tanks (in old cars) were made from galvanized steel. Only in cars that got undercoating were different. I didn't think they were painted, but I could be wrong. I know GM cars had bare tanks from the factory. Best way I can think of to get that look is to use aluminum and steel color paints and dab the different colors with a stiff brush to create a speckled appearance.
NOBLNG Posted September 13, 2022 Posted September 13, 2022 (edited) If I’m not mistaken, I think they may have been terne plate which was a 60/40 lead/tin coating over a nickel plated base. I believe the sheet or maybe the tank was then hot-dipped so the appearance would likely be similar to galvanized??♂️ Edited September 13, 2022 by NOBLNG
1930fordpickup Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 I don't think the galvanizing look would show up in scale. 1
