LVZ2881 Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 using them for an AMT '69 'Cuda 383 build.... what color should these things be, and what paint to use to get that color??
whale392 Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 They were a dull aluminum color with the raised lips on the hole edges chromed (if I remember correctly).
LVZ2881 Posted January 27, 2009 Author Posted January 27, 2009 thats a good pic!!! anybody have any idea what color I can use to replicate that??
Scalefinishes Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I would try Testors Metalizer Steel over flat black. Jameston
James W Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Hi James! I think Alclad Steel (L) #112 looks pretty close. Good part is, few people know what it should look like so just paint it and you will become the authority.
Spike Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 i did one for my garage dio and just painted it grey lol, good enough for me
Joe Handley Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Weren't the "recall wheels" cast aluminum?
george 53 Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Yes. Turns out the aluminium was too porous, and cracked/broke very easily. They were only in production for about 4 months before they were recalled. At least thats what I was led to believe.

I knew there were some kind of problems with them that caused them to crack around lugs. I guess Kelsey-Hayes redesigned them within a year or so and put them on the market as an aftermarket rim. I also read somewhere that the procedure that Chrysler used to test rim strength at the time included neutral drops into drive and reverse
