What is the purpose of this block? bolted to the pinion snout on this Mustang Super Stallion differential? Just curious.?

It's purpose is to dampen vibration in the rearend. Kinda like a harmonic balancer on the engine. Some claim it prevents wheelhop. But, it only weighs around five pounds. Some people even remove them.

In the entire driveline. Some of the automatic Fox bodies had another odd counterweight on the transmission tailshaft. 80s technology, no idea if it really worked.

I had a '79 Cobra automatic with a balancer on the yoke. Nothing on the transmission tail shaft. The weight on the pinion must've worked. My '99 has one.
