Dragonhawk1066 Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 (edited) It seems like everyone else has built at least one of these, so I figure it's finally my turn. The plan is for the body to be Duplicolor Bahama Blue with Silver, Charcoal, and Black flames using a flame mask from New York Speed Shop that I bought from Iceman Collections on ebay a few years ago. I also took the plunge and cut out the trunk to attempt making hinges for an opening trunk for the very first time. After all of the body and parts prep was done, I sprayed the Stynylrez Primer on. Dragonhawk1066 Posted May 29, 2023 Author Posted May 29, 2023 I made my way out to the shed to spray the Bahama Blue, and that's where disaster struck, twice. First, after spraying the first light coat I noticed a spot on each side just behind the door that wasn't present after the primer stage. I gave it another light coat and it was still there, so after a few minutes to dry I brought the body in for a quick dry-sand. I sanded it with 1500 grit and it seemed smooth enough to try another coat. It seemed to cover better, so I gave it a medium coat, then a heavy coat which appeared to do the trick. I went out to check on it a half hour later and the spots were still pretty prevalent. Not only that, but the paint dried with an alligator skin-like texture to it. I brought it back in and gave it another dry-sand, this time with 600 grit. The texture did not want to go away, so I decided to put it into an LA's Totally Awesome bath to hopefully strip the paint so I can start over with a different paint/shade of blue. 2 1
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 Looks to me like crazing, when the lacquer topcoat solvents are just too "hot" for the primer and plastic underneath. This is a prime example of why we harp on and on and on about TEST FIRST before committing to painting a model with a combination of products that aren't designed to work together, by the same manufacturer. 3
ea0863 Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 Sorry to see that Craig. Duplicolor has done that to me enough times that I avoid it now. Tamiya TS-19 might do the trick for you... 1

Thing is, I did spray the Duplicolor on a couple of spoons, one with white primer and the other with gray primer to see if there was a difference in tone a couple of years ago. I'm pretty sure I used Stynylrez Primer then too and the test turned out nice and smooth.

I’ve done that too…problem is, your kit isn’t made out of spoons… You MAY be able to salvage this by stripping the paint, sanding smooth and re-priming…but it won’t be a super fun process most likely… 1

Hope you managed to get it sorted ready for another shot I sure hope so, my hand started cramping and the rest of my arm felt like it was going to fall off, so I hope it was worth it, lol. The LA's Totally Awesome did pretty much nothing to strip the paint after three days, so I was relegated to trying to sand the paint off. After lots of wet-sanding, starting with 220 grit, then 320 grit and finally 600 grit it feels pretty smooth. I will spray some Stynylrez Primer back on it tomorrow and see what it looks like. 2
atomicholiday Posted May 30, 2023 Posted May 30, 2023 Too bad about the paint job. That blue was awesome. I recently shot two bodies with two different colors of Dupli Color. I used their primer on both and had no problems. I will say that the primer seemed grainy when it dried, but sanding it lightly took care of it. You’ll get it sorted. This is a great kit. Best of luck with it and enjoy the build! 1
Dragonhawk1066 Posted May 31, 2023 Author Posted May 31, 2023 I re-sprayed the Stynylrez Gray Primer on the body this morning and am happy to say it meets my approval. I also measured and bent some wiring for the hinges and glued some tubing in place for them as well as some thin sheet styrene to keep the trunk in place. Now I'll work on mixing up a custom blue for it and possibly get it painted tomorrow. 2

A little tutorial I wrote on hot rod flames that may, or may not, be useful on this project:

Your two builds of this kit are what's guiding me on how to do the flames. I only hope I can do your teachings justice. 1

ea0863 Posted June 2, 2023 Posted June 2, 2023 I have new levels of sympathy for you as of today. I'm working on a project for my son with a GT Spirit resin Jeep Rubicon which I'm redoing like one he just bought - - - but I messed up the paint job and just spent 8 hours with rubbing alcohol and a brush. Those hand cramps you were referring to are apparently a real thing!

Dragonhawk1066 Posted June 3, 2023 Author Posted June 3, 2023 I mixed up a custom blue with my usual craft paint for the re-paint, especially since I threw the can of Dupli-color out. I think it came out pretty good. I'll put a coat or two of clear on it before attempting the flame mask portion of the program. 7
mrm Posted June 4, 2023 Posted June 4, 2023 Looking good so far. I like that you color coded the brake drums. That's a cool touch. 1
Dragonhawk1066 Posted June 5, 2023 Author Posted June 5, 2023 Today's progress on the Revell '29 Model A Roadster. I sprayed on two coats of Createx 4050 Clear in preparation for the flames. Interior is sprayed in Apple Barrel White and Admiral Blue, with white embossing powder painted Admiral Blue for the carpet, a few touch-ups are needed but nothing major. Engine is sprayed in Anita's Galvanized Tin, Tamiya Clear Blue on the shifter knob, battery box, and front shocks. Tamiya Clear Red for the mufflers and wood grain steering wheel, and Panel Line Accent on the radiator shell, timing cover and oil and transmission pans. 1
mrm Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 (edited) I love the colors on your interior. Very rich. At this point I wonder if it would look better without flames, but that is totally up to you to decide. Edited June 6, 2023 by mrm 1
