CabDriver Posted June 27, 2023 Author Share Posted June 27, 2023 Thanks everyone - I appreciate the nice comments! @Andy Oldenburg, @Calb56, looks like you’re getting your wish re. the paint…kinda anyway… Got the body cleaned up, primed, and into a nice fine-flake silver base (Tamiya aluminum, in this case:) Then, added a coarser mica powder mix of silver flake, with a little gold mixed in: Once that had dried, I had a nice base to start the next steps: Next step…Tamiya clear red: Then I shot a coat of Createx intercoat clear over the body to protect the work I’d already done and designed some flame licks and a graphic, cut them from Oramask and applied them to the body: Next up, my favorite black…Createx Black Sealer: I wanted a red ‘pinstripe’ on the rim of the wheels so I shot those with a nice wet coat of the black to help stop it drying too fast, then wiped the bulk of it off the edges with a q-tip, as shown above. Then, after the black had flashed out on the body…time for some careful demasking…et voila! Tomorrow, once the black has set up a little more I’ll check for any areas that need touch up, and start laying some clear over top. I’m now at that awkward stage of having a bunch of stuff to paint before I can do some more fun stuff… About every other part aside from the interior will be chrome or some metal shade so I’ll handle those bits in the next couple of days…and tonight I picked out a color for the interior pieces: I really like this Citadel paint - it airbrushes great, but also brush paints and self-levels really well for any awkward little parts that would wouldn’t ideally want to mask (like the steering wheel, in this case…) I still have to figure out exactly where I’m going with the dash, but I’d had the idea of an interesting texture or material for the gauge cluster…I was digging thru my “interesting material” box and found this pearl-looking guitar pic that I thought would be a cool little accent piece: I chopped out an interesting section of it and it’ll sit right in the middle with a couple of gauges and switches, like this: Oh, and that shifter is a resin cast piece - it’s actually a skull-shaped headlamp from a Hot Wheels: Just a mini update…more soon, soon as I’ve done more! 4 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Just about wrapped up the paint this weekend…I’ve been trying to improve my clearing technique to get a better result pre-polishing, and it seems to be working: Not perfect, and it will still NEED polishing, but I’m getting better at laying down a nice smooth finish right out of the can… Cleaned up everything that will be chrome, shot it with primer, flat black and then dipped everything in Future to ensure a nice glossy base and then shot some AK Super Chrome: Used my favorite Vallejo tire colors on the 3D printed tires: And whilst I’ve been thinking about what I would paint the floor with, if this were a 1:1…carpet would be too impractical (without a roof anyway), paint would scuff, I didn’t want a bare-metal finish to distract from everything else…but I wonder if bedliner would be a good solution? It’s tough enough for the back of a truck, it would work well in an interior, right? To replicate the texture somewhat I stippled on some of this Crayola (!) texture medium, and then shot with a satin black: Got a pretty decent pile of parts now… Thanks for looking - more soon, soon as I’ve done more! 3 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
CabDriver Posted July 11, 2023 Author Share Posted July 11, 2023 Final update on this one, because once everything was painted it was just time for assembly. Got final polish done on the body (still in progress here): Assembled the engine and got it in the frame: Tires mounted to wheels… I like how the frame looks, assembled…never used so much black on a build! Then it was just a case of getting the headlamps in place, install the seats and gas tank, and glue the body to the frame for good: And once all THAT was done, final job (because it’s delicate) was getting the windshield glued to the frame with some canopy glue and then get that attached to the body…and…it’s about done! I’ll take some better photos and post them up…but that’s about a wrap on this one - thanks for following along everybody!
