Jantrix Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I have a Johan 63 Olds Starfire on the way Kev. I'm gonna build that one too. Better to be a built showpiece for years to come, than a sealed box in a garage somewhere.
MrObsessive Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Yeah, Johan cranked out quite a few of those USA Oldies kits in the '70's. And yes, they did mold them in whatever color plastic was in the factory that day. I've have somewhere in my stash of models, a Superbird molded in that hideous aqua-----and once had a Turbine Car molded in a deep burgundy that was so translucent, you could practically see right through it. That Caddy convertible is a nice model, but I think Johan used the wrong windshield frame to cut costs IMO.
mr moto Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Even when Johan did the initial production runs of those and other kits in the 60's they were seldom molded in white plastic. You never knew what color a Johan kit would be. The first runs tended to be not quite so garish - usually pale blue or green or maybe tan. And, of course, every now and then they were white. This 1960 Chrysler (that I purchased from a bargain table in about 1965) was molded in white but I have several unbuilt 60's vintage Johan kits that are molded in various colors.
tuffone20 Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 (edited) After reading this post I went and opened all 8 of my JoHan and and took a photo of them, and yes all will be built at some point in time. 3 of them I've had for some 15 to 20 years!! Does anyone want to try and guess which kits they are? LOL Anyways here is what I have. Edited February 27, 2009 by tuffone20
mademan Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 When JoHan did those "USA Oldies" reissues in the '70's they used whatever color plastic they had on hand. Sorry, thry'r not unusual at all. My '64 convert. is molded in dark aqua color. What would have been unusual is if they had actually been molded in white ! lol
george 53 Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Eve, I got the green 64, only mines a hardtop! Go figger?

Ive got caddy verts moulded in green, blue and white, 64 hardtops moulded in red, white, and light blue. hearses moulded in burgundy, tan, brown, 1 black(very rare 50 made from what I heard a factory promo shiped in a plain brown box with a picture of it taped to it) and a couple white.
John Goschke Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 (edited) The "USA Oldies" series were released in a variety of colors during their rather lengthy production run and the nutty colors don't add anything to the collectible value. Original '59 and '60 Annual kits were molded in white (which often ages to an ivory color). If I remember correctly annuals in '61, '62 and '63 were released in tan, light blue, light yellow and light green. And annuals from '64 into the late '60s (when I stoppped paying attention for awhile) were mostly white. One point about Johan's '64 (and '63 for that matter) Caddy convertible; the windshield header is not correct and should be replaced with one similar to the '63 - '64 Impala, with a higher crown. Hope this helps. Edited February 27, 2009 by John Goschke

AAAHH! I thought there was something off about that windshield header! The one Johan uses is too "straight" and "flat"-------while the 1:1 has the rounded '61-'62 "crown" with the straighter A pillar like the '63-'64 2 door B body hardtops. The Revell '63 Impala comes to mind as a perfect swap for that as that windshield frame is dead on accurate.

(please excuse the mess) but ive attatched a couple photos of my 1:1 project 64 convertible for reference.

I think the way it worked in the 1/1 world was that '63 and '64 Caddy two-door hardtops, Pontiac Grand Prix 2DHT, Olds Starfire and Jetstar 2DHT, Buick LeSabre and Wildcat 4DHT, Olds 88, Chevy and Pontiac 4DHT all used that "low-crown" windshield. All the others used some variation of the "high-crown" style.

sfhess Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I had an original 63 Olds Starfire kit that was molded in dark blue styrene. Back in 64--65......
Ron Hamilton Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 The Modelhaus '64 Wildcat windshield frame is correct for the JoHan Cadillac, and it has sun visors moulded in Use the vacuumformed glass from the 1963 Buick Electra from the Modelhaus. I used it on a '63 Olds Starfire I'm working on.

mademan Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 I have the tamya primer and had to spray a layer of silver then the white and boom all was well. i picked up this nice primer from the auto paint store, its light tan, and a high build, so it will fill any little surface scratches. its "Pro Form" "1k high build primer/filler its about 9.00 a can, but once you use it , youll never want to use anything else. It works great with all HOK paint, and the testors laquers!
