Jon Cole Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 The bodywork has progressed to the first coats of Dupli-Color Gray Filler Primer to check for sand scratches, etc. Because the car will be painted in a white Tamiya spray, I need to know if Dupli-Color or Tamiya make a white primer? Thanks! -Jon-
Tom Kren Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Try Murry's Auto Parts if ya have one I just picked up a can that is dupli-Color

Thanks! -Jon- The part number for the 12oz can of Dupli-color White Sandable Primer is DAP 1689. It may take a couple of coats to cover the gray primer. A light sanding between coats should be sufficient to give you a nice sommth surface for your final color coats of the Tamiya White.
Zoom Zoom Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 If you can locate Plastikote primer, they make a white and it's better stuff than Duplicolor. You can do a web search through Plastikote to find dealers near you. Tamiya white primer is really nice, very expensive but worth it. Second best IMHO is Plastikote. Duplicolor is just enough "hotter" that it cause problems sometimes. Tamiya white primer isn't always the best at covering colors; it's best to start w/gray and then go to white.
Guest promodmerc Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 (edited) I have a can of the Duplicolor white primer & I hate it!!! It doesn't cover worth darn. I'm going to paint my current WIP with Testors Electric Pink lacquer. I did a test with gray primer and the color turned out purple so I need a white base. I didn't want to have to put down a white coat on the gray primer as it'd be like painting it twice. At this point I should have used the gray primer and then put a coat of white on as I have applied three coats of the worthless white primer and the putty color is still bleeding through Edited March 1, 2009 by promodmerc

Guest Davkin Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 I second Bob on Platikote, their primers far out perform any other I've ever used. It's their Sandable Primer you are looking for. White is PN# T-237. The only place around here that carries it is Car Quest Auto Parts. I tell ya, when Pep Boys switched to the Duplicolor line I went through severe withdrawals and tried just about everything out there until I found out Car Quest carried Plastikote. I'm much calmer now. David
crazyjim Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Plasicote primer is the only way to go and can be purchased at Car Quest for about $6.00 a can. I use the sandable grey for everthing. If the final color coats I'm planning are lighter, I'll use the white primer.
jbwelda Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 that part about not covering worth a darn is a hidden blessing, it means they are very thin and it takes a few coats to build up. thats good esp with the primer stage to keep the paint depth down. anyway i love tamiya white primer for a final primer coat as its extra fine and talk about not covering worth a darn! but it builds up nice over a few coats. like mentioned, expensive though, like 8$ at my LHS for not a very big can. i really should search out some plasticote. like you have mentioned, i have found a good product only to have it disappear from the shelves seemingly forever right afterwards. frustrating.

I've used Krylon H20 latex primer with good result. Its thinner than enamel primer and looks good. It could double for white suede. I used it over white plastic and had a hard time seeing where I sanded through. Use it over gray primer and I think you'll be very happy about it. Gary
Jon Cole Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Think I'm going to give PlastiKote (sp?) primer a try. I just called a regional auto parts dealer (Bond's Auto Parts) and they stock that brand. As soon as I can shovel a path to my Jeep, I'm going. -Jon-
simonr Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 My choices are the Gunze Sangyo Mr. Surfacer 1000(a thinn and light gray primer) and the Mr. White Base, which it's another thinn flat white primer. Both come in spray or in a jar to use with the airbrush. The adavantage of any of these two is that they are really thinn and doesn't cover the details in parts as automotive primers do, even with the can that has a really nice valve that sprays like an airbrush. I haven't try a valve like this one, even the Tamiyas. Simón P. Rivera Torres
roadhawg Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Good luck finding plasti-kote everywhere i have tried that had it now carriess dupli-color im bummed I had that same problem around here. I have no idea why they all wanted to change to Dupli-Color, but all the local parts stores did. Nowaday, I do it the lazy (smart) way and just order it online. I order 2-3 cans at a time, shipping is usually the same. http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&search...Kote&page=1

jbwelda Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 yeah, see thats what i mean. it seems like its a distributor thing though, when one place stops stocking it, it seems to disappear everywhere it used to be. at least around here and in my experience. like the distributor stopped carrying it so it dried up everywhere they were distributing to.

Somebody, somewhere, always has it! And be aware.....if you order it online, don't freak out when it arrives and it looks different.....seems they have a new can. Rest assured, its the same stuff.
billgtp Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I use tamiya for the final primer.Works great & is thin
