Perspect Scale Modelworks Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 How are you folks painting the hood on the Revell Boss 351? I thought I could cut out the template from the instruction sheet but it is smaller than the hood. Should I just measure 3.8 mm from the edge and mask? What are guys doing? Thanks
Fat Brian Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 Yeah, I can't stand the color difference between paint and the decal so I'm planning on masking the entire center portion and cutting just the pinstripe from the decal sheet. As long as there are measurements for how to mask that's what I'll use. 1
vamach1 Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 I decided to paint the hood and cut out the outer part of the decal and very carefully position it as straight as I could. I knew if I used the whole decal it would be difficult to get it to “match” the paint color and the overlap would be visible. 1
Perspect Scale Modelworks Posted October 17, 2023 Author Posted October 17, 2023 Thanks Brian and Rex. I'm going to use Tamiya semi gloss black which looks like it may have less gloss than the decal. I have the same concern about the color match between the decal and paint as well as the overlap being visible. The thought of just using the pinstripe is a bit frightening to me. I'm not sure I'll be able to get it to lay straight and the masking will have to be dead on. Rex, you've done a good job on it. With the amount of detail this kit has and the extensive decal sheet, I wonder why Revell didn't supply a full decal for the hood. That would have made things a lot easier. Still not sure how I'm going to tackle this one.

I bought some matte black striping tape and I am going to give that a shot when I get around to mine. 1

Somehow I have in my decal spares seven silver and four black hood full decals from the old MPC kit and Fred Cady sheets. I’ve never tried to used them as I assume it would not lay flat no matter how much decal set was used. Edited October 17, 2023 by vamach1
1972coronet Posted October 18, 2023 Posted October 18, 2023 How were the bonnets painted from the factory ? Centre colour (black or silver) painted first, followed by a big masque, then the body colour painted ? I know that that's how Chrysler did it, at least with the painted stripes of the 1970 Challenger (and likely others).
vamach1 Posted October 18, 2023 Posted October 18, 2023 I know on my first Mach1 I owned in the 1970’s the flat black on the hood had worn through in some spots and was body color underneath. I would imagine the larger area on the Boss 351s was the same. 1
Kit Basher Posted October 18, 2023 Posted October 18, 2023 (edited) The Revell 69 Boss 302 has the decals with a wide section (maybe 3/16"), then a space, then the pinstripe. Kinda hard to explain, if you take a close look at the photo, maybe you will see what I mean. The wider section covers the transition from body color to the black, so masking doesn't have to be so precise, and it is easier to get the decal straight (although I didn't!). If you are going to cut the decal, maybe you can do something similar. I used Testors square bottle Semi Gloss black, not a perfect match, but OK. OOPS! i just re-read the previous posts and see that this is what you're trying to avoid. DOH! Sorry. Edited October 18, 2023 by Kit Basher

I'm using Tamiya semi gloss black and maybe a couple of coats of semi gloss clear to smooth things out. I'm going to focus on getting everything straight as possible. 1
Perspect Scale Modelworks Posted October 23, 2023 Author Posted October 23, 2023 (edited) So this is how I addressed it with a tip from @kitbuilderchris on IG. I measured 3.8 mm from the edge of the hood and masked the edges. Then sprayed Tamiya TS-29 semi gloss black. This is where I used Chris's idea and cut the decal into 3 parts. I applied the front piece first. Then the sides. Not perfect but I'm moving on. In retrospect, I could have sanded the paint edges a bit because it does show under the decal. Also, the decal has a bit more sheen than the paint. I considered spraying semi gloss clear but decided not to. As they say, It is what it is. Thanks looks good to me, Jay, might try it if I get this kit....
