vamach1 Posted November 2, 2023 Posted November 2, 2023 Was MPC confused back in the day? At least Steven’s is issuing a Mustang and not a Challenger. 2

tim boyd Posted November 2, 2023 Posted November 2, 2023 Here's a box stock buildup of the Connie Kalitta version of the MPC Mustang Funny Car kit from Round 2 about ten years ago (+/-). Presumably this new release would be the same kit with new decals TB 7
Mark Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 MPC was usually a year behind with funny car and pro stock kits back then. The Muldowney Plymouth was issued after the '73 annual kits so it used the '73 body. The '72 body was in use in the Richard Petty NASCAR kit around that time. Round 2 has the luxury of nearly fifty years' hindsight now.

This kit will be MPC1001, looks like it's in production now and should ship by the end of the month. It's based on the Blue Max Mustang Funny Car with the Halibrand front wheels last issued as MPC930. Besides new box art and decals I believe they added a pad print to the slicks. -Steve 5
Robert53 Posted March 24, 2024 Posted March 24, 2024 I am building this kit now. I don't do too many cars but have done a dozen or so since I returned to model building about 15 years ago. Mostly I've done Tom Daniel's fantasy cars but did to a couple of actual cars like Moebius Hudson which was a great kit. That said this kit is not too good in quality but then I believe it was originally released around 1970 which explains some of that. Things just don't fit well and many are basically just "stuck" on meaning CA is the best way to get them to stay. I found hard interferences with parts such as the steering extension with the frame which required opening up the "cockpit" slot width wise and the engine with a support to the right of the seat. When the engine is in getting it to locate in the frame recesses is difficult and I cut a bit off the transmission to do that. Then when the body is rotated down onto the frame it rather interferes with the super charger inlet. Just lots of problems like that and the instructions are rather poor in places too. I am building it for a client who built one around 1973 and have mentioned these issues. When you build it in 10th grade things like that don't bother you near as much as when you see what a lousy kit it is when you are going for a nice job.
