Worked for a couple of Ford dealerships during that period of time. The early Probes (turbo) were scary to drive but the later V6 ones seemed refined in comparison.

No.  AMT issued a couple of stock Probes (and one custom), but those were earlier ones.

I just retired after 42 years in a Ford dealership, those cars had terrible torque steer they wanted to head for the ditch.

Weren't Probes just rebadged Mazdas?

not quite, they were mazda 626 floorpans and running gear but the body was american. mazda didn't have a suitable sports car chassis apart from the rotary rx7 incidentaly the mk2 version was sold in europe too while the first only got sold in america, canada and germany. it was part of the world car program that included the contour/mondeo and fiesta. eventually it led to the second trully world car from ford (the t was first)
