ModelcarJR Posted March 13, 2024 Posted March 13, 2024 I bought this kit and one other one about 5 years ago, I think when this new tool was new on the shelves. I remember walking into Hobby Lobby, looking over the shelves and being disappointed that it wasn't there. So at this time, Hobby Lobby normally had some kits that they put on the clearance isle marked-down. So I went over there and lo and behold there were two of the new 68 Chevy Chevelles marked down to $7.49 each. I couldn't believe it! So I scooped up both of them and paid $15 for kits that should have cost $60. This is the second of the two. I have already built the other one. The reason I am building this one is two-fold; Its going to rain all weekend and I want to have something else to work on in case in case I finish the 65 Chevy. I know that is wishful thinking but the other reason is, I want to use the rest of the Willow Green MCW paint and then I will be done with it. The 68 has two colors that are very close and this will fill in for a substitute; Grecian Green Metallic and Seafrost Green Metallic. Close enough. So I added a vinyl top using the 2" tape method, primered, and then painted the vinyl top and black around the rockers. I'm getting better at the vinyl tops but the hardest part is gluing down the border using .020" plastic rod. Tomorrow, I'll tape off the french fry tray hat for the top, tape off the rockers and airbrush the Willow Green. The MCW paint will be gone and I'll have a painted body to foil. Thanks for looking! ? 5
ModelcarJR Posted March 15, 2024 Author Posted March 15, 2024 I painted the body today and have both the 65 and 68 Chevys done. Now I can work away on the 65 which I rubbed out today, despite the rain starting tomorrow and over the weekend. The 68 looks a little lighter than the 65 probably due to the fact that I painted it over gray primer instead of the silver (actually Evening Orchid) base that I used on the 65. But both look good to me and their was only 1 little tape pull by the wing window on the right side that I have already brush touched up after I took these photos. So, I got two bodies painted from my last bottle of MCW paint. Thanks for looking! ? 8
slusher Posted March 15, 2024 Posted March 15, 2024 Bothe look great John, I have always liked Willow green!
ModelcarJR Posted March 16, 2024 Author Posted March 16, 2024 Thanks, Carl and Keith! I appreciate your comments! I will be back to this one after I finish the 65 Chevy.
bobss396 Posted March 16, 2024 Posted March 16, 2024 My 1:1 '65 Belair was Willow Green, a great choice.
espo Posted March 16, 2024 Posted March 16, 2024 Nice looking vinyl roof treatment. Like the color and it goes well with the black roof and trim.
ModelcarJR Posted March 17, 2024 Author Posted March 17, 2024 Thanks, Jeremy, Bob, and David! I appreciate your comments! I will be back to this one after I get the 65 Chevy finished. Thanks for looking! ? 1
ModelcarJR Posted March 23, 2024 Author Posted March 23, 2024 So I am back on this one and foiled the body and painted all the other parts. I wanted to kick myself for forgetting the rear corners when I painted the body. So I had to drag out the compressor and air brush again and paint the rear corners and attach them. I worried about whether the paint would match but it turned out pretty well and glued it in place without any problems. the only parts left to paint are the engine block and a few miscellaneous parts like the master brake cylinder and booster. Hopefully, the pre-wired distributors will be shipped soon. I'll start with th e interior next. Thanks for looking! ? 2
ModelcarJR Posted March 24, 2024 Author Posted March 24, 2024 Finished the interior today. My wife said she didn't like the drab olive. I informed her that it wasn't drab olive but Italian Olive, which is much more classy. She didn't buy it. I think it will look fine once installed in the body. I get tired of black or black and white. What do you think? Thanks for looking! ? 6
slusher Posted March 24, 2024 Posted March 24, 2024 Nice interior John! You interiors always look top notch!
ModelcarJR Posted March 26, 2024 Author Posted March 26, 2024 (edited) Thanks, Carl! I appreciate your comment! Finished and installed the engine. I added plug wires without the benefit of a pre-wired distributor because the ones I ordered haven't been shipped yet. I also added a fuel line and filter and that short hose between the intake manifold and the water pump. I'll add heater hoses and install the radiator and hoses next. The chassis is also done and the interior installed on the frame. I didn't glue the steering wheel on yet so I could complete the chassis. After the engine bay is complete its on to wheels and windows and then I can finalize with hardware and decals. Thanks for looking! ? Edited March 26, 2024 by ModelcarJR Copy text 4
ModelcarJR Posted March 26, 2024 Author Posted March 26, 2024 (edited) Its on wheels! Everything went together well! Body is in place with no glue and wheel position looks good to me. I still have to paint the cowl black. Hardware and decals tomorrow! Thanks for looking! ? Edited March 26, 2024 by ModelcarJR 3
ModelcarJR Posted March 28, 2024 Author Posted March 28, 2024 Thanks, Jeremy! I appreciate your comments! This one is done! See more photos in the "Under Glass" section. A great kit that went together well again! ? 3
Noah H. Posted April 2, 2024 Posted April 2, 2024 That looks GREAT. Superb detailing and nice job on the body color and vinyl roof. Also, I can't believe you scored that kit for $7.49! I'll have to check the clearance section at Hobby Lobby more often 1
