I copied a link to an older thread on this forum. I can paste it into notebook and the link works. When I try to paste it into a reply here nothing happens. ?

If you are using a "real" computer (not a phone or tablet) then I can offer a hint.  When I post URL links I first click on the chain link symbols on the top pf the message compose window.  That opens up a dialog box asking to enter the URL. I past the link into there (usually leaving the "text" field blank), and click "Insert into post" button.  I don't just past the URL link directly into the compose window.

Like this https://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/191128-can’t-paste-links/#comment-2869491

EDIT: I wonder if you are asking why when you paste the URL to another thread in this forum into the compose window, it doesn't automatically expand into a small image of the thread?  If that is the question then I don't know why it would not do that automatically.

Ok. It’s not working again.? I am on an ipad. I can copy the link in the address bar at the top of the page. Then it will not paste into my reply message. I can however paste it into my notepad app. Then, if I re-copy the  link from notepad I can paste it into my reply. Other websites I can copy and paste directly to my reply wjndow.

It used to be when I pasted a thread link, it would expand into a small image of the thread and ask me if I want only a link instead. Now nothing happens when I select paste.

Can a moderator tell me why I can’t copy a link from the address bar and paste it into a thread here? I have no issues doing it on other forums that I am on. Thanks in advance…Greg.

I don't know how you are doing it but I always use the "link" icon at the top of the compose window. That opens up a popup where I copy or type in a link, and it also allows you to type in the alternate text to show up in the message.

I also use Windows ^C and ^V to copy/paste the link text (not the copy/paste pulldown menus). You didn't mention, but if this is on a smart phone, I have no idea.

If one copies a link directly into the message compose area, depending on the link, it might expand automatically (if it is a link to a photo), or post the alphanumeric representation of link itself. But for links which can't expand to a photo, I prefer using the method above.

Above I just copied the MCM URL directly into the compose area and it did remain a clickable link. So it works for me.

Well this time I held my finger on the thread title until a window popped up that offered the option to “copy link” instead of doing it in the address bar at the top of the page and it worked….from this forum.

do you get the black line of text? and is it the same as this? it might just be the wrong bit selected

I have seen that black bar previously and I usually just hit the “x” to close it unless it is a link to another website. Then I will choose “display as a link instead”.

If I copy an address bar from another website and try to paste it directly into the text here I get these options and if I click on “paste” nothing happens.

Directly pasted links will display differently depending on what the link points to.  If it is an image or a MCM forum thread, it will get expanded. If not, it will just be a clickable text link.

If you use the "insert link" button, those will always show up only as clickable text link, regardless where they point (images or MCM forum threads).  Again, this is on a computer, not on a smart phone.
