What if you shorten the breathers a little. Can you get the hood to clear that way?

Thats my 1st idea to just trim some off, if that doesn't work, I'll need to slice the fenders further. Another spot I ran into issue, was the extension touch also, they should be notched out under the air cleaners. I'm working midnight shifts now, so bench times been slow

This is great fun to follow along Jeff!    That motor looks great and the red paint job is awesome.

Thanks !

Very nice build. Thanks for sharing your challenges - it gives us all great ideas. You have some impressive skills there my friend!

I stalled out working in the T800 for awhile, puttering w the bottom dump trailer. This came as laser cut frames, and required everything else..something I enjoy doing. I worked on fitting the floating 5th wheel plate and its carrier, then added the "struts" that cross into the hopper. Everything is evergreen stock.20240614_213647.thumb.jpg.04a0a97ec6ca7da419885cc58351df75.jpg

This is how the entire process began after adding the rectangular ribs and framework to the laser cut sides...20240430_201921.thumb.jpg.310bd1cf94d25e7a0d49987dacf6f560.jpg

The framework for the clam shell doors is currently underway. I chose a style of doors from photos that looked interesting, and found on this common trailer. Heres a sneak peek. Make a rough pattern for the entire set that will laminate onto this so everything is similar.20240619_164412.jpg.dc34079ec64720f693993021056f35c5.jpg

Then add the slots, and holes  for  mounting later 20240625_213013.thumb.jpg.bade5aa70e7c544411d14d4ed3bbc61b.jpg

Nice progress Jeff glad to see you working on the bottom dump trailer. I found those end pieces on the clam shell interesting and a pain to get them to work together when I built mine. I’m definitely following your process on this one.

@Mopar - D- thanks for the heads up, not many of these have been built for ideas. I'm planning on making the ends rotate w a plastic pin, then hold open w another pin. Theres a cylinder behind these doors that open and close, lively pneumatic because I don't see any hydraulic tank.

@Gary Chastain- thanks for following along ! Hopefully I'll get mojo back on the fenders after the holidays to finish the KW

Finally back to the bench after our  family vacation to Massachusetts. We really didn't want to come home, it was so nice there..Plymouth is a beautiful town. 20240703_071859.thumb.jpg.fa98ecc24717dff1b1db6e753e5fbc1b.jpg

We ventured a little south to tour the battleship Massachusetts in Fall River,  still shocked how enormous these warships are..and those massive turrets.20240705_095322.thumb.jpg.24f61d4996da089c027ed8ffccdb0474.jpg

I tackled the clam shell doors, making them movable w plastic pegs. Holding them in the mounts gave me a length to cut strips,  and thin .010"  sheet for the bottom. I rolled the sheet over the edge of my workbench to form a slight curve, then tacked w glue. The ribs are 1/8"square tube. 20240711_210533.thumb.jpg.8feaa1617687e6a1b86afb681ba8e05d.jpg

There's more details to add, but reaching this point felt like a huge accomplishment. Thanks for the feedback!

Over the wknd I fabbed up the rear push bar typical on these trailers. Every brand has their own style, I picked one based on shapes.20240714_113835.thumb.jpg.9235ba313c9fadf47ace426bbd199e47.jpg

I wanted to finish most of the exterior parts before dwelling on the door actuators. That left the front and rear fenders, and air tank.

Small brackets for the front fenders were cut using my Chopper, then fit into the frames. I'll add the "tins" over the brackets later.20240714_201449.thumb.jpg.ba735ac6d80cb4faff8f678303b776e5.jpg

Thanks for following along!  I promise to get back to work on the T800 soon..

Nice work! Scratch building is really fun. Before I began printing I built a couple of trailers from scratch.

You're doing a wonderful job here!

Nice progress Jeff don’t you just love all the different angles you’re dealing with on this. ??

Haha ! I seem to struggle getting angles to match up on every build..this ones been no exception. It doesn't help that the frame isn't a standard angle my miter box has slots for..

I'm charging forward w the area I was putting off..those door actuators. Mopar-D sent a couple clear photos of them, which worked a treat. I found a parts reference for several trailers and nailed down a standard size. I need to finish making the brackets that attach the cylinders to the doors, then post pics !

This was way more difficult to align then I expected. I mounted the cylinders inside the doors, both sides had to fit precisely or they wouldn't open square..or be crooked.  Oh well..its done and I'm chugging on

Nice progress Jeff I know the work effort you are putting into this to get the doors to work. I remember it taking me several attempts to get the tie rod at the right angle for the doors to open together and open up the same amount.

@Mopar - D thanks ! I used your photos to judge where the cylinders would fit best, keeping my pins held in the brackets made for some interesting language. I finally used a dot of poster putty to hold them..and attached the brackets

I figure if it was easy..we'd have a kit of it by now lol

Jeff you’re welcome and you know that after you have this built if someone did make a kit of one it would not be the same as starting from scratch. Here’s the link to my WIP bottom dump if it helps.

Hi Jeff - going to be a big trailer when its finished - great detailing going into this.  Where did you get the laser cut frame pieces you mentioned earlier in your thread?

Thanks for following along! Im almost ready for primer and paint on the trailer

the laser cut frame rails were parts that a fellow model builder was working on before he passed away, and I was asked to finish the trailer

I pulled the T800 back down from the wip shelf planning to tackle those fender mods. After several hrs of muttering under my breath, I cut my losses and ordered a replacement hood. I'll just run the internal air cleaner, time to move along
