Laid off

Well, Friday I got the word that effective that day I was laid off. This is the fourth time since 2001, all due to the economy. Won't be going to the NNL East, gonna be raiding the parts box instead of buying new stuff. Erie, PA's a tough place to find a new job, unemployment is already high. I'll be looking for anything between Buffalo, NY, Cleveland, OH, and Pittsburg. I have been a foundry tooling engineer for years, have a lot of experience with several 3D, 2D, and simulation systems, and can figure out how to build a virtual master or mold for just about anything. That's tough to take no matter who you are. I'm sorry to here it. Things aren't good and it looks like their not going to get much better in the near future. I hope you can find work, before your unemployment runs out.

Sorry to hear this. I got mine in Janurary also. I sure hope things get better quick. This has happened to many times since I started working 30+years ago. Hope you find something soon. Ohio is in bad shape as many other states are also.

I've been out of work since May due to a company merger myself. Just keep your head held high and try not to let it get your spirits down too much.

Hopefully you'll be back to work before long, but my best suggestion is to try and find some odd jobs that you can do to make ends meet until then. Hauling scrap and cleaning debris out of people's yards is one of the things I have been doing to help make ends meet. It also helps to keep me busy and not going nuts just sitting around.

Bummer to hear. I got laid off on Dec 12 for 2 1/2 months. Wasn't long but it doesn't take long for things to get behind.

My few pieces of advice is to get right out there looking for a job. We all know how time flies and a few days can quickly turn into weeks that can turn into months.

Also, be smart about cutting costs. We shut off the cable TV (nothing worth watching anyway), quit buying coffees and eating out, cutting coupons, and started doing things at home that didn't involve spending money. Playing cards and games, campfires on our property, instead of buying CD's and books- borrow from the library etc. etc. Just be creative. It can really be a positve experience to learn where the household money usually goes and trim those areas.

Wow. I'm a plumber, and in the beginning, I hated it...well, I hated the jerk who led the construction crew I was on, anyway. I stuck with it and switched to service plumbing. It's not glamorous, but you can't have a guy sitting at a desk in India replace your leaking water heater. I'm good at it, too. Not just the technical side, but good with customers. At a house where I was repairing a leak in the yard, the busybody neighbor came out to gripe at me for laying an empty box on his side of the property line. Other guys would get confrontational, but I said I'll move it and called him "Sir". He later brought sodas to me and my helper. I ended up selling him a pressure test to see if his sprinkler system was leaking.

There was a huge argument in here a while back about customer service. I said it's a grey area. You can't just run people off because they don't do everything your way. Now I'm proving my theory correct. The guy was a grouch, but his money spends just like anyone else's.

What's goin' on...

Paul as well as you other fellas. The last four trucking companies I worked for I was laid off from. Either they went out of business,merger,or cut backs. At first I thought signing up for unemployment benifits was a sign of weakness. I went six months the first time I was laid off because I was too bullheaded and too proud to go on unemployment and that only put me in a bind. If any of you fellas might think the same DON'T you don't know how long it will be between jobs. There's no shame. Make finding a job a full time job. Try to devote at least five hours a day thru the week devoted to the job hunt. After a few months being off work it's easy to get comfortable and the job hunt started slacking (this happened to me once). Stay focused ... and don't look back!!!

Man another one bits the dust, boy so sorry to hear that my friend job hope U pick up work real soon so U can keep building new kits, as for me if I loose my job the whole country is in trouble U see I'm on a pension looking after my wife and get paid by the Government, I'm a care provider for her U see. Hang in there and make it a job to find a job that's what they keep telling me so that's my advise to U.

My advice-

Get up everyday like you are going to work. Take a shower and get your self ready as if you are starting your day. Devote your time to finding employment and do not get in the rut of running out for a snack or laying on the coach doing nothing. The downward spiral when you are not working happens fast. Have pride in the job you do no matter how big or small and do not let a title or lack of stop you from working, no matter how medial the position may be.

Be positive in yourself and get ready for a long road, employment will be the least of our worries here soon once the new guy starts to let the rats chew through the wall.

I feel your pain too man. I was laid off as of October 01, 2008. I have my retirement from the CSP, but it's only enough to pay the bills.

However, things took a major change to the good for me yesterday and I got a new job...and a good one too! Supposed to start in 2 weeks. Man I can't wait. I love my wife and all but I'm getting real antzy being around the house constantly!

Gotta say that sucks. I am in the same boat as alot of you as well. I've been laid off since December 1st. I have been in the flooring business as an installer and a salesman for ten plus years. Two of the last three places I worked at I was laid off. So I completely sympathize with you all. The crappy part is I can't even get a job part time at a grocery store. Guess I have to be 16 or 60. Sorry if that offends some of you, not trying to do that. I just being a realist. The bottom line is the country is in need of a serious sterioid shot in the ass to get things moving!
