Autoquiz #609 - finished

This quiz is a mixture one off and regular auto quiz. This car was build only 3 times and it is is based on an Hillman Imp. The Imp was a rear engined car that was build between 1963 - 1976. The 875cc 4 cylinder 39hp engine was originally design for portable fire pumps. In 1963 Zagato had designed the Hillman Zimp. Hillman owner Rootes Group planned to start serial production. When Chrysler heard about the comperation between Roots and Zagato they used their 50% stock holding to block the project.

I suspect where some of us saw it before was while hunting down the TVR Tina for the One Off Quiz a while back… also an Imp Special in an Italian suit, and found on the same enthusiast web pages. There are few more die-hard enthusiasts than Imp (and its sporty relatives) enthusiasts. I mean, if you want a rear engined, sharp-handling sports coupe powered by a derivative of a highly successful racing engine, what else are you going to buy…? ?

Rear engine special?  Chances are, it's an Imp.   In fact, my first thought was a WiIliam Towns or David Ogle creation.
