Simple tip to keep the cutoff from winding up in the carpet. Attach a piece of tape before cutting. Then fold up the tape with the scrap piece inside and toss it in the trash.

I try to avoid anything sharp at all. I have plenty of .020" brass and some odd pieces of stainless wire. I have used the tape trick and it works.
