The Modeling Hermit Posted September 17, 2024 Posted September 17, 2024 I found this forum in the old days when one had to use photo hosting sites in order to post photos. I just went back through some of my posts from the 2010-2014 era, and saw, not pictures that I'd posted, but notice that the pictures were no longer available from the hosting sites that I'd long ago closed out. In this modern time, we're able to upload directly from our computer, and even if the picture disappears from that computer, it's still here. It may be a small simple thing, but it is that attention to details that can make for a more cohesive partnership between the forum admin and the members. My point of this is to simply say thank you.
TonyK Posted September 19, 2024 Posted September 19, 2024 I agree, and appreciate being able to upload pictures from my computer. I don't subscribe to any picture hosting sites so if I can't directly upload I just don't do it.
Bugatti Fan Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 (edited) I agree that it is good to be able to upload photos directly, unlike other sites leaving one at the vagaries of the photo hosting sites. I questioned a British modelling forum recently as to why they do not allow direct uploads and it was explained that it would take up too much capacity, allow them to run it without advertising etc etc. As not being techie, I was asking for an explanation as to why. However, some posters took the time to explain it to me in layman's terms whilst some others were showing different levels of intolerance as though I should not be questioning that forum about it. Basically I was trying to understand why this forum could and that forum could not. Edited September 28, 2024 by Bugatti Fan
peteski Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 While storage space on hosting sites is getting cheaper, you still have to pay for it. In this instance the forum is tied to a publishing company, so there are obviously some funds available to cover the cost of running the forum. Many forums are standalone ventures, often hosted on "free" websites, so the amount of "free" storage space is limited. Photos take a lot more space than just text-based posts. I mentioned "free" because in reality the ads shown while browsing the forum actually generate some revenue to cover the costs on this and other forums.
Bugatti Fan Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 Like you say Pete, forums can differ quite a bit how they are set up.
