absmiami Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 Alot of on line ink was spilled wh the kit was issued about the windshield lines - think the kit lines are fine … 1
absmiami Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 The cast details on the kit firewall are not so great - remove them and make all the stuff that you see here - throttle linkage in brass and nickel will look much much better …
MarkJ Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Andrew, thank you for all the ref pictures you provide us. You have the scale modeler in mind when you take your photos, and it is very appreciated. Are those chrome headers?
Pierre Rivard Posted January 19 Posted January 19 I can see you are planning for a very detailed engine compartment with lots of added components and substitutions for race use. Look forward to it. About the windshield line. Glad you think it's fine, otherwise you're committing to major surgery. Revell uses a shorter convertible windshield on the coupe and the front part of the roof dips down to reach it. Picture is worth a thousand words they say...
absmiami Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 This picture is good for color - the exhaust headers are black - appear to be enameled ? - and the contrasting cam covers are polished alu … i think - dont think you would have anything chromed on the engine …
absmiami Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 The domed bolts that secure the head appear chromed - and they are a bit shinier than the cam covers -

Thanks for the clear up.

Thanks for the clear up. The "headers" are cast iron, coated with black porcelain, basically molten glass. https://forums.jag-lovers.com/t/xk-engine-porcelain-coating-on-exhaust-manifolds/245599 Edited January 19 by Ace-Garageguy
absmiami Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 thanks Ace black porcelain - looks like it by the way BAT - Bring a Trailor - has sold a number of XKE engines with lots and lots and lots of pix - and they usually keep the pix up after the sale ... handy ... 1
250 Testa Rossa Posted January 20 Posted January 20 I can't wait to get going on mine. Not sure if I'm going to backdate it to 1961 specs. The first 20 early E-Types were equipped with unique features like flat floors, welded louvers, and outside bonnet latches, as shown. 1
absmiami Posted January 20 Author Posted January 20 thanks Maxx for this post we need to re-watch A4's build - i think he took the trouble to open the louvers ... and another thought on the eng department - look how flat the finish is on the plug wires - just sayin ... 1
kensar Posted January 20 Posted January 20 A4 did the Heller Jag - just sayin Just about all the pics you will find are of restored cars, so finding pics of an original for reference will be difficult (Jay Leno claims to have an original unrestored Jag XKE, so you may want to look for the video on YouTube). 1
absmiami Posted January 21 Author Posted January 21 Wish i had A4 on speed dial …. Think he did the Heller because he didn’t believe that the Revell body would survive the removal of the doors …. he did open the Heller body louvers - love that build … just sayin …
kensar Posted January 21 Posted January 21 A4 did an excellent job on his Jag. If you decide to open the louvers - I wish you all the luck 🤞. I tried it on my Jag with a 0.25mm wide cutting tool (Tamiya panel line tool) and didn't like where it was going - the cuts still appeared to be too wide, so I decided against going further. I used oil paint to darken the recesses.

As far as I can recall, I don't remember ever seeing louvers opened up in 1/24-1/25 that looked really good. But I could be mistaken. EDIT: Even the much larger factory-molded open-louvers on some kits, like one of the Lancia Stratos kits for example, take extreme care to open further so they look "right". 250 Testa Rossa Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Actually, Krasca Studio makes 3D printed louver panels for the bonnet. Check them out. Also, they make wheels you can hand lace. https://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/data/htojg3fjddyztalzoat1.html
250 Testa Rossa Posted January 23 Posted January 23 I have that detail set from Krasca, but I only plan to use the louvers. The tricky part will be figuring out how to convert the bonnet to look like a welded louver bonnet.
