Happy modeling everyone. Expand Some of us are at least as harsh judges of our own work as contest judges would be, however. I'll never denigrate a man for deciding how well he wants to do something, and then performing to that level. But what I can't understand is celebrating mediocrity. It's the "participation-trophy" mentality. I'll never be better than a 4th rate skier, golfer, guitarist, trumpeter, or chess-player. Nobody is ever going to praise my efforts. And that's OK because I lack either the talent or the willingness to develop the skill to excel. I also fully acknowledge I would have NOTHING to teach anyone in those fields, so producing yootoob videos showcasing my poor levels of accomplishment would just waste MY time and everyone's who watched them. Dave G. Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Honestly, when I was doing contests, I found the worst critics to be outside the arena, so called friends. The judges at least had a kind word on how to improve, if asked. Same for top winners in many cases. Outside the arena, you got mocked for placing third with a ribbon, though they never entered a contest themselves. I like in the bible, where it says " a kind word turns away wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger". Proverbs 15:1 2
Force Posted February 1 Author Posted February 1 Constructive critisism is allways good if you know how to give it, and how to take it, some mean well but it comes out wrong. I have nothing against Chris's/HPIGuy's unboxing videos, they are good and informative when it comes to show what's in the box, but the explanations when it comes to what the parts are sometimes has much to ask, at least read the instructions first so you know what you are trying to show instead of guessing and jump to wrong conclutions. But the buildup videos from him, The Autistic Modeler and some others...naah, not to my liking, they are mediocre to say the least and has nothing to give me, I consider my building skills are above what they do...but with that said, I will not do any videos on it, my builds takes too long. I consider myself to be a decent experienced model builder and I like to see good models built where I can learn something here and there, some techniques and other things, it doesn't have to be super detailed show models who win every contest they enter, just models built up with basic modeling tecniques and a finished model that looks good from any angle. 4

Expand I have to disagree on this point, at least as far as model building goes. Just because someone isn't at an exceptional level doesn't mean they don't have anything to teach. First, anyone who has built for any amount of time has developed their own style, tools, and habits that could show others a thing or two. It might be something as simple as using a different type of glue that a viewer may not have considered. Second, if people only see the most beautiful builds they might think that the only options are "best of the best" and "total noob." I don't see it as celebrating mediocrity to let people know they can enjoy the hobby without being top-tier performers. 4

Expand I share the same view. There's no excuse for what he does, especially given the fact he is basically a compensated spokesman for whatever company the kit came from. I've only watched a couple of his videos, but when you assemble wheels wrong and glue tailgates shut, etc etc it gives off a bad vibe. If I was a manufacturer and gave him a kit to review and butchered it like most of his builds, I'd be quite put off. But there's some who think he hung the moon. 3 1

Ace-Garageguy Posted February 6 Posted February 6 (edited) This is the kind of YT content aimed at entry-level modelers I personally think has the most value. Nobody has to agree. Edited February 6 by Ace-Garageguy 2
