eran_k Posted January 3 Posted January 3 As my first 2025 i choose the AMT Scout II. from looking up reviews and builds i knew the hood is too curved so decided to fix it, hot water didn't seem to do the trick so i tried putting it in a dehydrator...the results were "unsatisfying".. so i went to plan B - make a 3D printed hood, also decided to make an older style grill to see how it looks. once i was happy with these parts, i primed everything and now im waiting for the primer to dry 9
eran_k Posted January 6 Author Posted January 6 Progressing along, this is a fairly basic kit so not too many details. i finished the chassis and interior and shot the first coat of paint on the body. i think ill add some darker wash to the the seats to try and enhance some details. i sisnt bother too much with the engine bay as the hood will be probably glued. 6
Pete68 Posted January 9 Posted January 9 (edited) Nice Scout I like that Open slotted Grille. Edited January 9 by Pete68 1
Monty Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Given the incorrect curvature of the top of the grille/front of the hood, I've never understood how someone at Ertl greenlighted this kit Years ago, the other leading model magazine had a great article that explained how to correct this without a whole lot of effort, but even without that, most builds I see are straight OOB. Glad you were able to find a solution to your issue, as it will add a lot more realism to the overall appearance. 2

I had to ditch all my old magazines in my last move. If memory serves, it wasn't all that difficult: Note how the actual grille area is basically a rectangle? From the pictures I've found, International kept this rectangular grille area design throughout the Scout's production run, so at minimum you'll want to end up with a straight line across the front of the hood and a straight line across the top of the grille area. The basic changes you'll need to do start with filing off the "arch" above the kit grille piece and gluing/shaping Evergreen or Plastruct styrene to fill in the "arch" under the front edge of the hood. To match the 1:1 grille area correctly, you will probably need a needle file set (if you don't have one, they aren't that expensive). Once you've done the plastic surgery, lightly prime both areas to check for issues that might need further sanding as you don't want any glue seams showing here. If OK, you should be set to apply paint. The hood/body should be like any other kit, while you may want to use a fine brush to do the outside edges of the grille area. ^^^These are vague recollections of the article, but should result in a more accurate build. I never got to build my Scout as I traded it off years ago. Hope yours turns out well. Anyone with real experience doing this fix? Please chime in.
eran_k Posted January 12 Author Posted January 12 well things didn't well quit as good, even though the body and the printed hood were primed exactly the same (mr sufacer 1200 gray) and painted the same time with the same paint, somehow the hood came out in a different shade of green. the decals were also pretty bad, tore up in few places and remained wrinkled no matter how much decal set i used. never the less it's done. i'll try a better job with the next one (someday), maybe i'll get the other version with no top. 2
