Cool that you were able to build a scale replica of your Dad's car.  I plan on building a scale model of the 1967 Mustang GT my Dad drove on my parent's wedding day.

This is a replica of my Dad’s ’68 Charger, the only brand-new car he ever bought. I was born in ’70. Some of my earliest memories of the car were sitting on the “buddy seat” arm rest as my Mom was taking me to kindergarten, (1975-ish). By then, the car was already showing its age, (due mostly to the NE Ohio winters); but even then, as a 5-year-old, I loved the looks of the car; from the sunken rear window, to the hideaway head lights, to the cool gas cap. Anyway… here it is.

Body: Original MPC. R/T emblems were removed from the grille and rear panel. Vinyl top was simulated with .010” x .020” plastic strips being used for the top seams and roof trim moldings. Vinyl texture came from 3M Artists Adhesive spray. I got a sample of the original green vinyl from a restoration supplier. I matched the color by mixing Wal Mart acrylic craft paints and spraying it through an airbrush, then a satin clear coat.

Chassis: AMT ’68 Roadrunner. The rear-end and turned down tail pipe came from the AMT ’71 Charger. I am not sure that the 8 ¾ rear end is correct for a 318 non-a/c car, (my dad doesn’t remember which rear-end the car had), but I know the Dana 60 was not correct… and I did not have anything in inventory that looked like the smaller Mopar 7 ¼” unit. Finally, the 26” radiator and core support were swapped out for a 23” unit, (correct for a 318 car).

Engine: 340 from the AMT ’71 Duster. Valve covers slightly modified to resemble ’68 318 covers and 90 degree oil filter adapter was removed. Air cleaner was made from junk yard parts and a modified 340 lid. Not the EXACT contour of an original… but pretty close. The 340 exhaust manifolds were used as they are the closest I could find to ’68 318 manifolds. Transmission came from the parts inventory. Pan was slightly reshaped to make turn the 727 into a 904.

Interior: Center console removed and replaced with a floor tunnel. Center arm rest and column shifter came from the AMT ’71 Charger. A/C vent on the dash was filled in and the rear window defroster switch on the dash was removed. Interior was painted with vinyl interior paint from a restoration company for an exact color match.

Jamie....really cool story and an excellent model, particularly on the vinyl roof. Ii think yours is the first 1968 Charger model car I've ever seen that correctly reflects the 1/1 scale differently colored pleat in the '68 Charger interior.  I've got one painted '68 De ark Racing Green Metallic that has been sitting waiting for completion for a long, long time; I am planning the same interior colors for that one if i ever get around to finishing it.  Thanks for showing and sharing....TIM
