You asked for it, here it is in final color. Still have to clear coat and trim out, and apply decals yet to be purchased, then final clear rub and polish! But its in its pre race glory! LOL. Jody

I'm finally back on my Comp Vicky and got a question for ya all. What type of seat belts were used in 1962 in dragster framed cars? Interior photos from that era are few and far between. I expect just a 5-point harness is the ticket, but would like to hear from all the experience here.

I thought I would throw my hat into the ring here with Grumpy's '72 Vega Prostock.

I am starting with an MPC Monzega kit and a resin trans kit to convert it into an actual Vega.

I am also using a Model King Fire Fighter Mustang II kit for the chassis and stuff.

Slixx decals round it off.

I had to cut the Turbo 350 auto off and glue the FF kit trany to the Chevy SB.

A few changes from my last post. I decided to do the body over. Fortunately I was able to get one from another forum member. I wanted to get rid of all the trim on the body. You'll also notice I've stretched the front wheel openings to make room for the wheels that have been moved ahead on the frame.

Here is a pic of the painted chassis.

Interior is partly done. I'm using this low back bucket from the Amt 63 Impala.

Everything is looking good all the way down the line!

I got back on my comp coupe and hopefully some updates soon... just got some engine and suspension paint on.

Just one photo and it's a big one. Working on the engine, the competition pack 283 Chevy with front mounted Povin blower for my Comp Coupe. Been making the springs for what I believe is a crude "blowoff valve" on the intake. Maybe someone can verify this is what it is. I've seen it on most Povin blowers and it is modeled, but just a flat, round plate. It's just in pieces in the photo, but the intake is drilled and typically 6 bolts with springs on their shafts screw in.

BlowOffValve_DSC3093.jpg

And another question while we're here. All the brass paint I have really sucks. Model Master and Floquil Brass. Both have chunks in them.. it came that way. Is there any brass paint that goes on smooth? The bolts in the pics are painted with the Model Master and look terrible.

Also, as this is the 60's, the engine got fueled with "leaded"! The Vicky body is so long that when I did a mock up, it did a wheelie standing still! So. the engine got filled with lead sheets to balance it out.

The back of the frame was extended so it now supports the back of the body.

OK, I'm putting my oar in. The long pole right now is that I need a Replicas & Minitures Co. of Maryland Ardun head conversion kit (part no. DD-16) ASAP if I'm gonna get this baby done by 12/31! If anyone has one they can spare I'll gladly replace it the moment I receive mine from Norm!

Here's the scoop:

This is the Clarkson, Ledbetter and Friend Ardun powered competition roadster. I first saw it on page 102 of 50 Years of Rod & Custom. I've collected other information on it but it's a pretty obscure car.

Here's the CLF mill:

Plans are to use the body from the Tony Nancy comp roadster and either a stretched Tony Nancy chassis or the Ramchargers FED frame with the steering converted to external mount. Each has its pros and cons. There are also body conversions to consider revolving around the parachute shroud and a body extension forward of the fiberglas T shell.

BTW, I would give my first born for a clear copy of the logo on the cowl so I can make a decal!

Here are some more pics of this car. I think it's drop-dead gorgeous and only hope I can do it justice!

Well I’ve made some “progress†on this build. Actually more like two steps forward and one step back.

The Tony Nancy Competition Roadster body comes in three pieces, left and right main body halves and a turtle deck. I want to avoid visible seams and also needed to have a complete body for trial fit to the chassis so I glued all three pieces together with styrene reinforcement under the seam along the body halves to provide when I sand and fill the seams later.

The next step was to construct a chassis. The chassis on the 1:1 is a Woody Gilmore “flexi†frame so I thought I would use the Woody flexi frame in the MPC Ramchargers FED kit. The suspension and front of the frame looked almost identical to the CLF car. I built up the frame and then mocked up the body, making sure the bottom of the shell was aligned at the firewall with the bottom of the frame, just like on the CLF car.

Then I took a profile digital photo of the mockup using tires from the Tony Nancy kit. I noticed that the Ramchargers tires were considerably wider than those shown on the 1:1.

Here’s the original picture:

I then took the picture and stripped out everything but the car:

DSCF7560-web.jpg

Lastly I laid in this shot over the original side view of the 1:1. I made sure to match the bottom of the bodies and the overall size of the body and tires. Here’s the result:

Ardun-Comp-Roadster-1-compare.jpg

As you can see, starting rearward from the firewall area, the Ramchargers frame sits much lower than the frame Woody built for the CLF car. I suspect the driver sits much higher up in the CLF car and that the chassis kicks up at angle from the firewall. In addition the Ramchargers’ overall wheelbase is about 12-13†longer. And lastly the firewall on the Ramchargers car sits further back implying that the CLF car either was running an in-out box or had a length of driveshaft to sit the engine forward. The Ramchargers car was state of the art for its day and ran a slider clutch and no transmission.

The bottom line is that with next to no additional data on the CLF car I’m flying blind trying to figure out what’s happening underneath the bodywork. It would take massive butchering of the Ramchargers frame to come up with something that matched the side view picture of the CLF car.

I’ve decided to proceed according to my original plan by using the frames from the Tony Nancy double kit and build a tribute to the CLF car rather than an exact replica while trying to stay as close to it as possible but allowing for the limitations of the skills and materials I possess. Next step, combining the rear end of the Tony Nancy Roadster frame with parts of the Tony Nancy Dragster chassis to stretch the wheelbase out as close to the 1:1 as possible.

Thanx for lookin’,

Quick update. A modeling friend on the TRaK board suggested a small angle cut on the Ramchargers chassis might do the trick. It would be right behind the firewall vertical tube. I mocked it up in P-shop, and with a little more liberty on the "tribute" side (full set back on the engine) it comes out likes this:

The Dragster shops are working overtime. The frame is almost ready for paint and the Vicky coup doors are being welded shut with Archer weld bead "decals". I can't wait to see how these look in paint!. Lots of detail painting in the works on all the parts. The carpet monster regurgitated the two parts that were missing! The headers are the biggest question now. I wanted to make some zoomies, but as time is running short I may just shorten and drill out the kit headers that are in the photo. The magneto is wired and ready and believe I have the method of fabrication for the rubber fuel line ends worked out using hex and round rod with brass metalizer paint. It's probably about time to glue some of the engine and blower together for some test fitting before the frame is set in weld metal and lacquer!
