iBorg Posted April 8 Posted April 8 Need a bit of advice. I'm scheduled to do an IPMS show outside of DC this weekend. Do you think that what's happening to the economy will kill sales? I have an assortment of common, less common and fairly rare kits such as Jo-Han and late 1960's kits. I have nothing to show.....my hobby area got flooded so everything is stashed in a box or in a storage pod. We will travel to the show (about six hours) only to go to an Irish pub on Friday night and do the show on Saturday. If it wasn't for dealing with insurance companies and contractors I'd be anxious to go but this combined with the market tanking, I'm just not sure what to do. Thanks!

I agree with Muncie. plus, if the past is any indication, economic downturns usually show that most people cut on big ticket items, but continue to allow themselves "small pleasures". I suspect buyin a kit or two falls into the latter... Good luck and enjoy yourself. CT 1
espo Posted April 8 Posted April 8 From what I have heard the Jo-Han and early kits should sell well. Good luck dealing with the insurance companies on the flood damage. They tend to paint a glorious picture of what they will do to protect your valuables when selling you their policy and treat you like you had nothing when you have a claim. 1
iBorg Posted April 10 Author Posted April 10 I had decided I needed a break and the show would be good for that. Unfortunately, family responsibilities have raised their very ugly heads and I can't make the trip. Darn it!
Dave Van Posted April 10 Posted April 10 The bank Analyst in me says skip the show (looks like you are) The hobbyist says go. From a selling point shows are a dud for those with mixed collections of commons. ebay is very expensive but cheaper than a 5 hours trip with hotels, meals and gas, (tolls too in DC area)
Spooker Posted April 10 Posted April 10 I just did a small local show near me April 5th. Had the same feeling, but decided to go because it occurred to me that people might want to "stock up", even on common kits, before the hammer falls. I also decided to "deal" a little more than usual, knock a few bucks off multiple purchases. Even NASCAR stuff was selling decently. It worked out well, my best show in years. Better than e-Bay, too, and more fun. I'm sure different economic areas will respond differently, I live in a pretty depressed area, so your mileage may vary!
