TECHMAN Posted September 10 Posted September 10 Use a 12"x12" glass, had used for years in model room in Texas, when we moved here to central Kentucky 4+ years ago, built a 12'x12' "hobby room" in farthest corner of the garage. Went to a local "flea-market-mall", got a couple of used tables. The shorter one 2'x4' had a THICK formica (sp?) top in good shape, so decided to use it for the main building table. When I laid my chunk of glass down on it, found no "wobble"...... dig out a feeler gauge set, and only found one small area toward an edge that could get a .002" under the glass..... SO..... when building a frame (etc.), sometimes use my glass, sometimes not..... I got lucky (for $14) DJ 3
Straightliner59 Posted September 13 Posted September 13 I just remembered that there's a sheet of 3/8" glass in my closet that's about 20"X24". I have no place to use it! I already have a granite surface plate, and a piece of 12"X18"X1/4" glass on my workbench. I've been envisioning new layouts for my shop, lately. If I ever get around to redoing it, maybe I'll make space for the big pane. 2
chris chabre Posted September 14 Posted September 14 I have several pieces of glass that I use. Makes it convenient to if I have to move it as well. For real car fab, I have a cast iron surface plate, various pieces of glass panes and my chassis table is a 6ft wide by 12 ft long 2.5 thick steel topped bench. It weighs 10,000 pounds haha 2
Geno Posted September 14 Posted September 14 I just use a tempered glass cutting plate my wife gave me, seems to do the trick.😊👍 2
Chariots of Fire Posted October 1 Posted October 1 Got a piece of window glass from local hardware store. It sits on a wood cutting board that we discarded from the kitchen. I tape the edges with masking tape to protect fingers from getting cut. A perfectly flat surface for making frames or preparing squared up corners. 3
1930fordpickup Posted October 2 Posted October 2 I have a Starrett 12 ×18 pink granite surface plate. When one of the older guys retired at work I bought it from him. I was going to use it at work but we have several large plates to use. Not only that another guy here bought a 24 x 36 plate that I can use. It was mentioned about going to a counter top place. Not a bad idea if you have one in the area. They may charge you but I believe it will be cheaper than buying a small head stone. 1 2
