jlucky Posted Thursday at 03:39 PM Posted Thursday at 03:39 PM Just wondering if any of you builders have any thoughts on how best to duplicate the modern Top Fuel Roll Cage Helmet back shield?
espo Posted Thursday at 05:08 PM Posted Thursday at 05:08 PM Find a very thin material that you can easily shape to fit inside the roll bar. I don't know if a thin plastic would be shapeable enough without heat to make it fit. Maybe a small piece of a paper product of some sort and paint to match the roll bar color?
SpeedAndViolence Posted Thursday at 05:18 PM Posted Thursday at 05:18 PM I would suggest starting with Tamiya tape to get a rough pattern of the inside, then grab a cheap tinfoil cake pan. I have never tried it myself, but I do agree with @espo, even the thinnest sheet plastic available currently, will not be flexible enough. 1
iBorg Posted Thursday at 06:39 PM Posted Thursday at 06:39 PM What about looking at preformed plastic from things like a drink bottle or preformed plastic from packaging?
jlucky Posted yesterday at 03:16 PM Author Posted yesterday at 03:16 PM Hey guys thanks for the tips. iBorg...yes I've been looking at all kinds of packaged products to find a similar shape...haven't found one yet. I do like the idea of using some kind of tin foil! That's at least a shapeable material. Thanks again...we'll see how it goes.

It is amazing how much we learn from one another here.
Spooker Posted yesterday at 07:20 PM Posted yesterday at 07:20 PM Know anybody with a vacuum former? Or just smash form a sheet of thermo plastic over a wooden buck. 1
Straightliner59 Posted yesterday at 07:35 PM Posted yesterday at 07:35 PM The wood buck and thermoforming is a good idea. Also, in aluminum, pick up some Maid-O-Metal tooling aluminum. It forms, easily. It's softer than regular aluminum foil or cake pans.
bill-e-boy Posted yesterday at 08:36 PM Posted yesterday at 08:36 PM Cut a bit of the bubble bit on the bottom of a 2 litre soda bottle. Not sure what quantity that is in USA but they are 2ltr here in NZ Or the foil skirt from a wine bottle screw cap is quite a soft ally and can be burnished to suit. Place it on a backing of say polystyrene and burnish the shape with your finger. You could use an ally tray but these are a little harder and may need something a but firmer than your pinky. Being ally all they need is a polish up to look the part
