Curious because Stynylrez and Kaleido Paints ( and possibly others) offer it.

If you’ve used it, how did it compare to regular primers?

The gloss primer is designed for overlaying metallics - silvers and metal tones and stuff like that that NEED a black base to give the best effect.

For those applications, it’s super useful - I’ll use it when I know a part is going to end up some kind of metal shade, and I don’t feel like doing regular primer, THEN gloss black, then a metal shade.

For most other applications though, regular primer will give better paint adhesion and would probably be a better choice

So metallic paints will "magically" adhere  as well to a glossy primer as non-metallic paints to flat/satin finish primer?  Interesting  . . .

Sometimes the part you are wanting to paint is supposed to be shiny black, so a shiny black primer would be perfect. I often use Mr hobby black primer for semi gloss/ flat paint finishes - same sort of idea. I also have used Tamiya white primer for the main body colour. Works great.

I have the same question, Peteski.

Whether the first, black coat is considered primer or paint, it sure is glossy. Might be the nicest black (without polishing) I've seen in my short time back in modeling. It sure does work with that chrome.

^^^One of the reasons I asked. I’ve seen several Barbatos Rex videos where he uses Japanese hobby paints that require a gloss black base for optimal use.  The results are generally spectacular, and as has been mentioned, a gloss black primer saves a step in the process.

This. Certain paints are formulated to be applied over a glossy black base coat to give the desired results. High shine Alclad2 paints, as well as SMS Hyperchrome, are two examples of metallic coatings that require a shiny black base to give maximum reflectivity.

Gloss black primer is made for these types of finishes.
