During a period of updating my tools I purchased the Tamiya stand when I installed my paint booth, thinking it would be handy in the confined booth space as opposed to the garage and my turn-anywhere coat hanger. I have since virtually abandoned it after 2 trys and went back to coat hangers and maneuverability. I found it difficult to get at all surfaces on a car body, especially the underside edges, without picking it up and using it as a coat hanger.

I see many people using this stand and was wondering how you all like and use it. Does the rotation help getting good, even coverage? Does your booth setup allow access to the lower edges that I found difficult? I know we just had a thread that went into the merits of wire coat hangers but I'm just curious about these stands and their usage.

I do love mine. I have two of them actually. I will agree with you on the portion of getting underneath the body, as you do have to pick it up. Otherwise I use mine all the time. I usually put the body stand on top of the other unit to help with getting underneath, but sometimes you have to lift it up. I also use a lazy susan base in my booth.

I also like the rotation and clips for attaching small pieces. I've also found that using the holes provided in the stands work with other objects well too.

I feel it is a worthwhile tool to have.

I got the same one, not really wild about it. I love the clips and the clip holders.

My paint stand is one from Micromark, it's one that you hold in your hands, it has foam that contacts inside the body and a spring to keep tension on it. It's easy to maneuver, and easy to get it hung up after painting before transferring the body to the dehydrator. It was highly recommended by one of my friends, I saw how he used it and I got one ASAP and quit using the old coat hangers and don't miss them a bit.

At one time I was also thinking about picking one of those up myself but thought about the underbody coverage issue. Another thing I don't like about them is that once I spray a body, the last thing I want to do is just leave it there gathering all sorts of dust while drying which is the reason I prefer the hanger method.... :D Bob, what do you do with the dried paint on your stand? Do you clean it after every use or just let it collect paint after each painting session? I ask you this because at times, when I use the same hanger I get little chips of paint coming off the hanger when I don't clean it. Of course, to me is no big deal because all I have to do is replace the hanger w/ a new piece but of course, in your case it's an investment...

Mine could use some new foam blocks, and I've scraped the buildup off a few times. I take terrible care of it, but it works like a champ.

I've used these stands for a while now and have good luck with coverage. I tend to "jamb" paint with my brush..edges and lips and wheelwells all done first , then fill in the whole. I get a fair amount of overspray buildup on the wires, but as they need adjustment body to body I check for loose or crusty and wipe down with lacquer thinner. Seems to work well for me!

I've been using the Tamiya stand for about a year and love it. I haven't disposed of the old wire hangers though.

Foxer, if you want to get rid of your Tamiya paint stand, let me know. Maybe we could work out a trade or something.
