Guest Mustang3.8 Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 (edited) Hey, y'all. Here's my new WIP. A rare 1971 Olds Delta 88 lowrider. The exterior will have a metallic gold base with a red metal flake top coat, and a tan viynal top. The car will be lowered on Pegasus wire wheels with white wall tires. The interior will be two-tone brown. It will have a colour matched 455 Rocket engine. I'll post some pics as soon as I can. I'm still debating whether I should put rear fender skirts on it. george 53 Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Kevin, YES by all means put skirts on that barge! It'll make it look even LOWER! Do they come with the kit,or do ya gotta make 'em? From what I remember they had a few compound curves around the wheelhouse area, so ya might have your work cut out for ya. If nothin else, it'll make ya a better modeler, and make that car downright mean lookin! Go for it!

Guest Mustang3.8 Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 (edited) That Olds 98 looks like a Cadillac. What year is the white one? Here's some mock-up pictures. I think this is the stance I'm goin' with. Edited July 17, 2009 by Mustang3.8
george 53 Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 (edited) Kev, that's cause it's just as BIG and ritzy as a Caddy! But yep they's both Olds's around mid-80's, but exact years, I don't know. We started building Oldsmobiles on our Cadillac assembly line in 1984, and man, was THAT a shock! For 75 years we built Cadillacs at the old Fleetwood Plant, and when we had to start runnin Olds's,we ALL knew the end was near. Fleetwood permanantly closed down in 1988. MrObsessive Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 This Olds is a '72............back when GM was still making true 2 dr hardtops. I agree with Steve..............DO NOT put fender skirts on that 88!! It just wouldn't look right! I didn't know Ray carried the Delta 88's................I didn't see it on his site. Is it a new addition? This will be pretty sharp with that color combo.....keep us posted!
george 53 Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 Steve, thanks for the info, an Bill, I don't think Ray makes a 98, I THINK it was bein used as a comparison. But I wouldn't mind have either of 'em!
MrObsessive Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 Not the 98 George, but the Delta 88. I'm looking at Steve's site right now and don't see it listed. Maybe I'll give him a call or drop him a line as I'd like one down the road.
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 that thing is a monster! if you want to go lowrider with this one you NEED some of the reverse offset or deep Pegasus wires. those deep flared out wheel openings make probably most wheels and tires look small. Dave Thanks, y'all. Dave, I think the wheels I'm using are Pegasus wires. What do you mean reverse offset? I've run into a problem with the engine. I put the 455 Rocket from my '69 Hurst Olds into it, an it was dwarfed by the engine compartment, so now I need a new engine. Any Ideas? Delta Dawn will also be goin' old skool, skirtless.
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Thanks for the ideas, Steve. The block is also narrow. Is'nt the Olds Toronado a rare kit? I've also got another idea, since this will be a California car, I'm thinkin' 'bout making some scale surfboards to go with it.
george 53 Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Kevin, to be honest with ya, THAT'S how it's SUPPOSED to look! Look at the pic that Bill put in of Juha's Olds. That engine compartments at LEAST 4 Ft. wide! So if the engine LOOKS dwarfed by the engine compartment, it's only cas it IS!!!! So don't worry, go head and use the 442 engine ,as that IS the proper size block for it.

Guest Mustang3.8 Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Thanks, Steve. Nice lookin' Toronado. I been lookin' for a '72 Toronado. They are nice lookin' cars.
rollinoldskoo Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 is this a resin body or an old plastic kit? if its resin, WHERE DID YOU GET IT FROM oh and throw out those 20 year old pegasus wheels and get some of the current ones... http://stores.scaledreams.com/-strse-Pegas.../Categories.bok chrome Ds or chrome deep Ds
GOTH KUSTOMS Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 Dont skirt it, just wouldnt fit the build at all, and I agree with Rollinoldskoo, lose thos 20 year old pegasus, and slap a set of those newer version, low profile puppys on that slammer build,

I'd love to see what you can do with one of these babies. I think I might keep the Pegasus wheels, as they add to the old skool look I'm goin' for.

Guest Mustang3.8 Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Hey, y'all. Sorry for the lack of updates, but I've been busy working. I just sprayed the metallic gold base. I'll post some pics as soon as I can.
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Hey, y'all. I had some difficulty with the paint, so I had to strip it.
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Hey, y'all. I'm back at this one. I sprayed a new coat of Red Metal Flake last night. It came out great. I'll post some pics when I can.
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Here she is, in all her Red Metal Flake glory.
Nick Winter Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 well Kevin asked me to post these so I will.
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Ok, y'all. I'm on the home stretch with Delta Dawn. There is song of the same namesake. Delta Dawn by Tanya Tucker Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on could it be a faded rose from days gone by and did I hear you say, he was a meetin' you here, today to take you to his mansion in the sky She's 41, and her daddy still calls her baby all the folks 'round Brownsville say she's crazy 'cause she walks downtown with a suitcase in her hand lookin' for a mysterious dark haired man in her younger days, they called her Delta Dawn prettiest woman you ever laid eyes on now a man of low degree stood by her side and he promised her he'd take her for his bride Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on could it be a faded rose from days gone by and did I hear you say, he was meetin' you here today, to take you to his mansion in the sky Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on could it be a faded rose from days gone by and did I hear you say, he was meetin' you here today, to take you to his masion in the sky Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on could it be a faded rose from days gone by and did I hear you say, he was meetin' you here today, to take you to his mansion in the sky to take you to his mansion in the sky to take you to his mansion in the sky
David G. Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 I'd like to vote no on the skirt issue. Here in Phoenix, there aren't many of these left, and of the very few that are, most are kept intact because they are much more valuable that way. I've seen convertables go as high as $40,000 with some of the two-door hard-tops in the $20,000 range. I'd also like to get one of these kits if at all possible. I've owned one of these beauties for about the last 20 years and I've been slowly working on restoring it. It would be great to have a model to go along with it. As far as the engine bay, here are some photos that may help.
disabled modeler Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 my first real car was a 72 toronado-green w/tan vinyl top and interior.....love to find one too. maybe mustang3.8 could use an engine from a 1/24th scale kit to fill up the engine bay?
