Aaronw Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 (edited) Online has opened up options for those in remote areas beyond anything they could have every dreamed of 10 years ago. If you have a good LHS that is great but that is largely a luxury only provided for those near a large city. My nearest "L"HS is 2 hours away 100+ miles each way. My nearest good LHS is 4 hours away. I know I have it better than some for LHS options. I have a better selection of model supplies available online than any LHS I've ever been in, and I've been in a lot. One of the first things I do when I visit a new city is look up hobby shops. Edited December 11, 2009 by Aaronw
Harry P. Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 This is my first RWD car since 1977... it'll take some getting used to in snow!
Guest promodmerc Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Oh, I have all of those experiences...while out doing other things... I just don't buy my models that way. BTW... we got our first snow the other day, and while I was out and about "experiencing life," my suspicions were confirmed. A Mustang is not a good winter driver! You think a Mustang is bad try a 97 Cougar with a 4.6 It's bad enough in the rain. I will not even try snow with it. That's what my '97 Mountaineer is for
BigGary Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 You think a Mustang is bad try a 97 Cougar with a 4.6 It's bad enough in the rain. I will not even try snow with it. That's what my '97 Mountaineer is for When I took my '73 Charger to Michigan in '76 I bought snow tires a.s.a.p. The skeptics said "All you need is radials" before radials were very common like now. I laughed at them as I sedately drove away while their radials were spinning in the snow. Driving in snow with RWD is a different ball game. How did we get on this topic? Gary
Eshaver Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Common Harry , wheres yer sense of adventure , the thrill of getting there in one piece ! Hey , trucks for the most part are Rear wheel drive ..... Ed Shaver
Bruno Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 My personal experience is that I will buy from a LHS if I can because of outrageous shipping rates from most online sellers. I can ship a kit anywhere for about $7, but most online retailers want at least $10. I recognize that boxes, packing labor, and postage are legitimate expenses, but some I think are trying to make most of their profit on shipping. I think $10 for shipping a kit is ok. That's what it costs me to ship a kit (IM from Canada). What is outrageous is when someone wants $20 or more for shipping a kit . And I see a lot of that on ebay.
gray07 Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 Our walmart has models right now , they bring them out every year for christmas and after that they are gone, but if there any left after christmas they put a big discount on them to get them out of the store. They are located in the middle of the isle
my80malibu Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 That's not true at all. They quit selling them because they weren't generating the kind of "churn" that Wally wanted them to, and Wally figured there were more profitable uses for the shelf space that models were occupying. That is true if the Kids were getting high off of the glue Wal Mart would gladly supply them with all they want.

What is outrageous is when someone wants $20 or more for shipping a kit . And I see a lot of that on ebay. ....LOL! GRRRRRRR...don't get me started on Ebay shipping thieves! It seems to have gotten worse over the years. People wanting $10 to ship ONE kit in US is just a rip. The USPS Falt rate boxes have caused a lot of it as well. Those boxes are great for shipping horse shoes and pool balls, but model kits will ship in a FREE priority box for $6.00 +/- BTW...we ship 1 car to canada for $7.00, 2 for $9.00. (FYI)
jimnohio Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 I have seen a 6-8 selection of 1/32 scale Lindberg kits at different "cheapie" stores for $3.99. The boxes look great! Also, I noticed a bunch of ships, Lindberg, at our local "Sav a lot" (What was i doing there? don't ask...lol, it involved Christmas baking supplies)
Madd Trucker Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I went into a walmart wherhe I live they had the reissue of the doge truck with flat bed trailer and 40 ford went to get two of them and I was told I couldnt buy them as they no longer carried models the clerk removed them from the shelf and dumpepd them into a cart . I later learned they refused to carry models cause good ole Wally couldnt get what he wanted to stock .. there was also an instance where some one made rideing mowers and supplied them to walmart when the cut the cost of them he sued due to a contract he had with them they pulled the mowers and wont sell them again
plasticfrog Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 hey guys, we have a hobby lobby that rarely gets anything new other than the same stuff thats restocked over and over. we also have a so called hobby shop that has kits with the box art faded from sitting on the shelves for the past 5 or 8 years......hobby lobby came to town and it was great at first.....they were cheap and had new goodies.....their prices have doubled now to e bay level. not the best town to live in if your a builder or a collector. i get mine from others that love the hobby as i do and rarely off e bay when i can afford them......mark Hi Mark I understand what you mean I shop the same Hobby lobby as you do I drive about 60 miles to get there and I get upset about the prices. I live out side of Bowling Green MO.I would love to trade or anything else with you if you like I have alot of parts from kits from the 90s to now not to many of the old stuff.
plasticfrog Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 For me, I don't get any particular charge out of "how" I get the model.. the fun starts after I get it! So I buy online, for many reasons: Huge selection-far more than any "brick and mortar" store (the whole world is my "local hobby shop"), the convenience of always being open, the better prices vs. hobby shops (in most cases, even after you add S&H), the ability to do an instant "price check" and finding the lowest price available for what I want, and the fact that it comes right to my door! No gas wasted, no traffic or parking hassles, etc. I agree with you I've been shopping on ebay for 4yrs now and I have bought some kits that i thought that I couldnt find. hobby lobby is 60 miles from me and a good hobby shop is 75 miles from me and when I do drive up there there prices high.Just tel you this when revell came out with the 1969 nova kit the hobby shop thats 75 miles from wanted $26.99 for it I got it on ebay for 13.95 puls $6.50 for shipping I saved money here.
