diymirage Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 looks nice so tell me, how are those modified stockers ? ive seen a few of em on the shelves and ive always been intriuged by them but i never wanted to fork out 24 bucks for a model where the box art tells me relatively nothing but...to be honoust, i did build the modified stockers hauler (53 ford F-100) and i really liked that one
Eric Stone Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 so tell me, how are those modified stockers ? It's a stock-ish body with some trim gone and the wheel openings hogged all out to holy heck, with a tube frame, cage, engine, huge tires, and not a lot else. Like something that would run in the modified stocker class at the local Saturday nite oval track.
rlz58 Posted March 2, 2010 Author Posted March 2, 2010 (edited) Thanks. They are not very detailed. This particular model has a very basic chassis with wire axles and yes they do come with hogged out wheelwells and steamroller tires. I got this one in a trade,I probably would'nt have payed that much for it.I did have to fill in the wheelwells with strips of plastic to get them back closer to stock. Edited March 2, 2010 by rlz58
Eric Stone Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Yeah, I had to buy one out of curiosity on clearance at Hobby Lobby, also partly because I love Chevelles. It's ok, but I wish the big tires were a little smaller... I wasn't smart enough to fill in the wheel wells like you did, and mine's already painted. I kinda lost momentum on it, but I might finish it one day. There's not much to it, so mine doesn't lack much and it's done. Your wheel wells look pretty good. Did you use wheel openings from something else, or sheet styrene?
rlz58 Posted March 3, 2010 Author Posted March 3, 2010 Yeah, theres not much to the chassis .I did add crossmembers and more rollcage. As well as making a dash out of some sheet styrene. To fill in the wells I used .040 styrene and wrapped it around a paint bottle then used a heat gun to form it. Then I used tenax glue and glued it around the whellwell until I had built it up to where I wanted it.Then dremeled the backside to thin it down.Sounds complicated but it is fairly simple.
LUKE'57 Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 I fought those things back in the seventies when they first came out when I built models for the local racers. I think they just cut the rear openings from where the funny car with the altered wheelbase was and that's why the rears are so large. I filled them in with plastic and putty back in the day but the prettiest one I did was for an asphalt racer friend of mine. I cut the openings out square and then grafted the square cutouts from a '71 Cyclone body in the holes. The side creases matched and when I cut off the concave lips I had some pretty nice fender flares to boot. Put the MPC Grand National chassis under it for a better cage and wheels and tires. If you want to build a Chevelle these days then the Revell '65 Chevelle body is a better choice. Just combine it with one of the easily (and cheaply) availible Monogram Nascar racer's chassis and roll cage and you're in business. Here's one I did for my son, who's a big Tiny Lund fan, for his birthday. A lot less hassle and closer to scale.
rlz58 Posted March 11, 2010 Author Posted March 11, 2010 Luke ,that is agood looking racecar.I hope to have mine finished soon .
LUKE'57 Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 Thanks Ricky, lookin' forward to seeing yours when you get'er finished. I've been fighting those Chevelles in one form or another since the early seventies. Here's one from back then that I built from one of the "Time Machine" funny cars. All I had to do back then was bugger up a Grand National chassis and cage and fix about half the wheel well on the altered wheelbase quarter panels. Those Modified Stockers took almost four new fenders to get right for the local cars.
rlz58 Posted March 12, 2010 Author Posted March 12, 2010 One of these days I'm gonna try to hand letter a car like you and Gator do.I love to see your photos .You gave my then 3 year old son one of your picture cd's at Salisbury show 3 years ago and we still look at it together. Thanks for giving us a great memory. And thanks for your contribution to the hobby.

Thank you so much for sharing that with me. That's why I love to do the shows. It is wonderful to see the kids reaction to the models. That's why I put the plexiglas covers on my show cases and wire the cars down. I love to see a kid's eyes light up and see him run over to the case and press his (or her) nose to the front and even beat on the glass a little (that's why I use plexiglas and wire'em down so they can do that) with such enthusiasm. I always try to have a good supply of "freebie" discs to give the kids (both young and old LOL) to help keep the flame alive for modeling and the old racers.
rlz58 Posted March 21, 2010 Author Posted March 21, 2010 I finally finished this. These are some of the best decals I have used .
MarkJ Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 Excellent job, Ricky. Friday drove Chevy's when they were not very competitive in the period between Smokey's #13 Chevelle and Juniors #3 Monte Carlo that Charlie Glotzbach drove. So for a while he was the best Chevy fans had to root for. Again, Excellent job on it.
rlz58 Posted March 22, 2010 Author Posted March 22, 2010 Thanks Mark .I think I am gonna try to do his red 67 Chevelle if I can find some decent photos. This is only my second "Darkside" build.
MarkJ Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Go to this site and look through all of his 60's through 70's pictures . I'm sure I saw one or two of Friday's 66 Chevelle and maybe even his 67 chevelle. He won't allow you to copy and paste them to your files so just take a picture of them right off the monitor screen with your digital camera. http://public.fotki.com/tona/
