zak78 Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 (edited) Hey everyone, I'm new here and this is Koenig widebody 928 that I've been working on for the last few months, on and off. I don't get to update much because I travel a lot, but here's some of the work i've done so far. Filled the ugly hood scoop here: A lot of sheet styrene and putty here, since the Fujimi parts didn't fit at all: [imghttp://i34.tinypic.com/kdakno.jpg In putty, ready for paint. Front plate holes and JDM markers were filled. Right after the clearcoat was sprayed: Just setting on the wheels, which will be refinished. It needs to be polished again, this time starting with 6k grit. One shot with the trim painted. Body is dirty: And another from my phone camera Edited June 5, 2010 by zak78
RodneyBad Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 The body work looks Great and the Paint looks Awesome!! Welcome aboard.
Corvette.Jeff Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 i played with a regular 928 with my 'vette once, that little porsche couldnt keep up!! they seem to be pretty fun cars to drive though
zak78 Posted June 5, 2010 Author Posted June 5, 2010 (edited) Next up are some interior details. The stock door panels have no detail, and the e-brake is molded into the floor, so I cut away lot of that, and started scratching my own design out of styrene. From an angle: Stock seats were pretty terrible, and had no backs...So I filled them, made covers for the hinge areas, and made side controls. Still need to make controls for the top of the seats, and add a wash. Both pics are from the cell phone again And thanks for the kind words, Zukiholic Edited June 5, 2010 by zak78
Rider Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 Great start, I really like those wheels, and the paint...love it.
Foxer Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 Ahhh. a RED 928! The interior looks really good. I had 5 944's, so does that count as 2.5 928's?
Monty Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 My old boss had a metallic blue 928 - what a car. I like the direction you're taking this one. It looks sharp. May I ask what paint you used on the body?

Having also had a 944, I'd say one 944 counts as two 928s. As my mechanic told me when I asked him about the then-current 928, "You buy one of those and I'll see it more than you will." My 944 was not without its own problems, but you could double them on the 928.

May I ask what paint you used on the body? Sure Monty, it's Tamiya Mica Red over a gold basecoat with TS-13 clear, all from rattle cans. This is my first attempt at spray-painting since 2000 I'm a total noob to the building process. I forgot to sand the gold before spraying the red, so the paint will probably always have some orange peel in it. This version, with the 440hp supercharged setup, and the body too wide for the drive-through, was a childhood dream for me. I can't imagine the cost of maintaining the boosted car . It would probably be more cost-effective to swap out the engine for a Renegade Hybrids LS7 conversion. But that's what I'll be doing with a 911, when I finish this kit
RodneyBad Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 The interior is looking great. nice work on the seats and doors. Looks like ya haven't lost your touch for building.

My 944 was not without its own problems, but you could double them on the 928. That's for sure! There was a local 928 that was ALWAYS in the shop when I was there for routine maintenance. They seemed to have to strip half the car apart just for simple parts installment. NOTHING was easily accessible. When they were running, though, they were one of the best Porches ever made. This was the first Porsche ever designed from a clean sheet of paper at the time.
Zoom Zoom Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 This I'm looking forward to! Nice work so far, excellent colour choice I have the same kit, almost got built once...keep thinking I need to scrounge up some better wheels/tires.
jbwelda Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 very nice work there, making up for the from the box deficiencies fujimi seems to love to build into their special versions with body kits. the tags got messed up for one of your photos so here it is: my experience with similar kits has taught me you need to do a lot of filling and sculpting to make the body kits really look good. of course that makes them look much better than the 1:1 prototype which seem to be pretty poorly fitting or maybe its just the yokels to attempt to add them to their cars. love that interior youre building up there esp the controls on the seats and hinge covers! regarding real ones, i like 944s a lot, a former gf of mine had one i had free rein with for a year or so. but i also know a couple people with 928s and i would much rather have one of those. they seem to have little if any problems though as someone mentioned when you do its difficult to work on. but the ones im familiar with get abused a lot but never seem to complain. sweet project, i hope to see it to completion which looks like its pretty close at this point.
Foxer Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 (edited) very nice keep us posted for sure! since we are sharing 928 stories here's mine i ran across some guys in a 928S when i had my '72 Nova, raced them a few times and took the Porsche down everytime. the guys were cool, some younger spanish fellows and i saw them around my area quite alot. later i got my first Mustang, an '87 GT and thought i was fast, it felt faster than my Nova did. i lined up against the 928 again and this time the tables were turned and he put the smack down on me. the Nova was alot faster but it didn't feel that fast to me, the Mustang with it's 5-speed and generous torque just felt like a much faster car and it really wasn't, not by a long shot. Dave hahah,, drag racing a 928 ... how silly! (didn't mean you, Dave) Edited June 5, 2010 by Foxer
LDO Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 The color looks good on your nails, too. LOL But seriously- cool car and I just Love Tamiya spray paint. You gotta show us the "reflected light bulb" when you get it polished out.
Joseph Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 Nick, Looks great so far! Keep plugging away and post when you can, I'll be watching. Cheers! Joseph
Railfreak78 Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 The 924 944 and 928 are my favorite Porsche cars and this looks awesome so far! Nice attention to detail and your doing this car justice.

zak78 Posted June 6, 2010 Author Posted June 6, 2010 (edited) The interior is looking great. nice work on the seats and doors. Looks like ya haven't lost your touch for building. Thanks man. I've probably only completed three other kits though, and those were LONG ago I decided to get into modeling about three years ago, but the combination of 70+hour work weeks and girlfriend in Canada (I'm 1000 miles from home at the moment) has meant very little time to get anything done. At some point I'm going to take a week off to just stay home and make stuff. This I'm looking forward to! Nice work so far, excellent colour choice I have the same kit, almost got built once...keep thinking I need to scrounge up some better wheels/tires. I was thinking the same thing when I first opened the kit. I thought, the wheels supplied by Koenig shouldn't be smaller than the OEM ones from Porsche But I really couldn't find a suitable alternative, as far as width and sidewall height were concerned. I saw on another forum that you were thinking of combining this kit with the B+B targa version. Now that would be cool Edited June 6, 2010 by zak78

This kit it nowhere close to completion though. I have to scratch numerous interior widgets, a set of mirrors, and straighten out that godawful wing, etc. The color looks good on your nails, too. LOL But seriously- cool car and I just Love Tamiya spray paint. You gotta show us the "reflected light bulb" when you get it polished out. Lol yeah, I got some strange looks at work later that day, when I arrived with a metallic red hand It looked like I'd been involved in some sort of industrial accident at a cosmetics factory. Thanks again for all the encouragement guys. More updates to follow soon after I get home from vacation. Nick
modelhut Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Great job so far Nick I remember this Koenig version from the late 80's if I'm correct. The version I remember was a beautiful dark blue, bordering on an eggplant purple. It was written-up in a number of magazines at the time, European Car, etc. I always wanted a 928, 32 valves, shark-like profile...... but if it's anything like the old BMW 750iL that I bought for my wife, used, V-12, the maintenance will kill a normal guy. I guess I'll have to look for a model kit of a 928, that's as close as I'll ever get. Thanks for letting us follow along! Rod
zak78 Posted June 27, 2010 Author Posted June 27, 2010 Some pics of the dashboard so far: I thought the factory air vents were boring, so I made these PE and plastic eyeball vents to spruce up the center console. I'm going to do something unusual with the lower portion, where the ashtray is. Maybe a recessed iPod holder (with iPod) or something. I may also replace the head unit with something more interesting. Taking pics of it is challenging because the clear plastic over the gauges tends to create a lot of glare. Thanks for looking Nick
zak78 Posted July 4, 2010 Author Posted July 4, 2010 (edited) Lookin' better and better man, nice job Thanks man. Tiny update: I'd gotten bored with the center console, so I replaced the conventional head unit with a touch-screen computer, which is actually my girlfriend's HTC phone/MP3/navigation/video device. It's under very shiny clear plastic, so getting a good shot of it is next to impossible, hence the low lighting . Edited July 4, 2010 by zak78
Railfreak78 Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I love the detail to the dash! Looks sharp and I can't wait to see more. Nice work.
