I finished painting the engine transmission with Testor's Metalizers Stainless Steel, gave it a little wash to finish it all up. Also, masked the gas tank and painted it aluminum. I am trying to use as many different metal colors as possible to give the chassis some contrast!

Also added a bit of weathering on the chassis using pastels and washes....

Those Metalizer paints surely play a big roll here with the overall contrasting look on that chassis. I have a lot of people telling me about the little time they spend detailing the bottom of their models because as they say, "it's the last thing people really look at", I think they're wrong, lots of eye candy when you do it right.

Cruz, that undercarriage looks excellent!!

As you know, I'm a BIG believer in detailing the chassis as much as the rest of the car. Might as well if you're going to put so much effort in the engine and otherwise.

Yes, it DOES get noticed when sitting on the contest table for those that think otherwise! ;)

This is the kit I have to buy! You got amazing building skills and that engine is awesome as the chassis! And this looks perfect in the mockup pictures. Great work, keep it going!

It's really amazing to see how the various shades of colors can add so much detail to a model, this chassis looks like it has a million parts, you are doing a great job on this model and I can't wait to see it finished, I am sure it will be another amazing build from you.

I dig the stance 100% for anything else, but for a true replica of a 60's Super Stock, it should be a little higher, especially in the front. The top of the front tire should be visible under the fender, and the car should set level, or just slightly leaning to the rear.

Here's an article from Muscle Car Review I scanned the other day (for a totally unrelated reason  ) It's about a 62 Royal Bob Cat and 62 Galaxie.

And here's a Phantom Bubbletop 62 Catalina with that stance!!!!

And by all means, if you're just going for a super cool model, forget everything I just said!!! :D Build 'em how you like!!!!

edit - I wanted to ask a question! I noticed on some of your other builds with black chassis (Hurst Olds specifically , there's some sort of dirt effect you've done, is that with the Citadel washes also?

Brett, thank you for your observations, it's always good to know that there are people out there looking at all the little details. The stance you see is not the one the car will have, at least in the front. The rear tires are already glued but not the front ones. I will show you the simple method I use to weather my chassis once I get to my computer, right now I am texting from my phone.......

Okay Brett, I like to use these pastes in conjunction with pastels to weather my chassis/engine bays.

Picture057.jpg

They are called Rub and Buff and are available at Michael's. I just rub a little bit on my hand and spread it around with my finger, you have to go easy, a little bit goes a long way. Just spread it all over your chassis and once done, use pastels for the dirt effect. I like to use a brown color, gives it a dirt/rust look.

Here is a '59 Caddy chassis I did recently, as you can see, I go easy with the pastels, just want to have a slightly used look.

Also did my Starliner in the same manner.

At the end, I will also use the Citadel washes throughout the mufflers, transmission and lighter colored mettalics like the pipes and other areas. You can spread your pastels liberally since they dont cover fast and you can always blow off any excess. As you can see, it's pretty easy and quick and gives the chassis a little more character and realism!!!

WOW! What a great idea, simple but effective, I will go to Michael's tonight and purchase me some of these pastes. Where do you buy the pastels? Does Michael's also have them? Any specific brand?

Thanks Kevin, Michael's certainly does sell the pastels, here is a picture of the brand I bought, they have other brands but I thought they were a little expensive, these work just fine for what I wanted to do!

I also used them in the interior of this Miata......

Outstanding work as always, Marcos! The subtle weathering and detail painting on the engine and chassis are perfect.

Just one suggestion, if you don't mind. One thing that helps this kit have a more accurate look is a little refinement of the rear wheel opening. Out of the box it's too flat and squared off on the top. In this photo you can see that its actually got a subtle curve to it...

You are right John, I have been told by 2 other people about this issue, it's something I think I will have to work with. It is subtle but I think it's something that can be easily fixed. Thanks a lot for acknowledging this!! ;)B)

Thanks a lot for that. I have silver and gold Rub and Buff, I'll have to pick up some of the colors now. And as a failed and refomed armor modeler I have TONS of pastels and pigments!!! B)

Just look at the lines on that baby! Pontiac sure knew how to style a car back in those days! One of the best looking roofline/windshield shapes in the early '60's!

John, you have a good eye for details, until now-----I never noticed the off radii of the rear wheelwells!

WOW, what an awesome looking Pontiac!!! And of course it would look a lot BETTER in MY garage!

Next, I am working on the interior making sure I have the correct or close to correct colors.... :D

Yeah, I've started doing some research for the one I have planned. I've noticed there's 2 "Blue" interior schemes, one has white as the lightest color, the other has a light blue/turquoise. From what I can tell, the middle blue and dashboard is matched to Ensign Blue, which is the same as Nassau Blue, so the Model Master paint may be a good starting point.

Posted

Yes, I also thought that the Nassau Blue would be close to the correct color for the interior. What I did with the lightest color, in this case the light blue was actually add more white to it to make it lighter. After masking, I added the darker blue in the middle and corners of the seats, I think these are the closest colors to the real one.

The lighting conditions in my room are not that great, I will be shooting pictures outside once I am done with the whole interior!

I think you nailed the colors, that looks great!

Don't forget the piping that borders the dark color on the seats, a lot of restorations miss it. It's molded on the kit seats.

I think this is the only pic I've found that has the exact interior of the kit, some have bucket seats, or if they have bench then they've got different door panels!

Sorry I've been such a nit-picker, but the '62 Cat is one of my favorites!
