Many thanks to Stevens International for getting this kit back on the shelves. This is my first try at using the salt technique for adding a patina to a car body. Critiques welcome. Aside from a tire n wheel change this'll be pretty box stock.

I'd said earlier in a thread where the person was pissed about his critique, that being ignored is much worse than getting a bad critique. And I was right.

Guys, I'd rather you tell me it sucks than say nothing at all.

I think it looks ok for your first att, mind you i have never tried this method or anything like it at all.

So I am no expert.

Its sill a a work in progress. so looking forward to seeing it built.

I know what you mean Rob, and I agree.

I would like to add a comment about your build - I haven't gone down this road yet with the salt(to be honest, it's a little intimidating), but you are jumping in - I think this is a great first attempt. Your spots for weathering seem to be in good strategic and believable areas that weathering might actually occur. I'm personally not too crazy about the colors, and I would be tempted to give it a little sanding in some spots to see what happens. I think your final build will come out just fine regardless - looking forward to more of your progress.

That's for the replys. As for the color, I wanted something a little different. It's Krylon Avacado green. The colors beneath are a royal blue fogged on, and the red oxide primer. Plans include the stovebolt six weathered to look like a well used mill. Wheels will be black steelies with wide whites. Interior I haven't thought about much just yet, but nothing too wild as you just can't see it very well. Likely will use box stock parts. As for the chrome parts, I want them to look well used as well so I'll be fogging on some satin gloss, to kill the chrome shine and while it's wet I'm going to blow on some powdered rust colored pastels to simulate smal rust spots & pitting. As it stands I'm going to add a little wash into the areas where body panels meet and call it good. I'm really enjoying this one.

I wouldn't worry about the responses here other than using them to get ideas and inspiration for future work.

You're on an interesting track and I'll be interested to see where it ends up.

Former drag car maybe?

Old show car?

Perhaps loosen the trailing edges of the front fenders and 'find' a little more rot...

I hear ya on the no comment thing. Its not worth it to me anymore to post anything other than comments. And thats getting old fast. But I was waiting on some more updates on your build.sorry it took this long I've been busy with my antique mowers and small engines.I just think people are on egg shells at this point in time to say anything or they just comment on the top shelf builders which there are to many of...But all that aside, your build is looking good for a first try event.keep at it.

Thanks guys. Rick, I'm planning on just doing this as a forgotten old custom that has been found and given new life. More soon.

Heh Rob.....I think you've done very good with Virgils salt tech...I think the avacado is the perfect color for this era. IMHO..try a little misting of an acrylic rust way reduced..so you hit the whole car and then a light rub with steel wool and I think it would explode! huh.gif

and look at his tissue paper tut HERE...I think the seats and headliner might work for this one...

MikeMc, alas I'm not airbrushing just yet. It's on my wish list though. I'm planning on a rusty acrylic wash though. The steel wool I would think too abrasive? I used a well worn dishwashing green pad on the body earlier to help remove all the salt and knock down the edges of the paint as well as buff off the shine. After the wash dries I'll give that a try again. I'll have a look at crankies interior tutorial.

I've got the wheels/tires done and the chassis and engine are painted. More pics tonight.

Rob, the green pad is rough...you need the real fine steel wool "000"?? LIGHTLY scuff it.

Keep it coming!!

Rob, i think you have a really cool project here and i think you've done just enough weathering of the body to be just right and not overboard. i'm not sure that i'd call it a "traditional" hot rod build though even if you build it with strictly period correct parts. it's more along the lines of a barn find or what some may call a rat rod with the weathered body. that can be a good thing too as the "barn find" thing is pretty big and there are some pretty cool old hot rods coming back out that have been tucked away for a long, long time.

if it were me i'd finish the drivetrain to look new or recently freshened up as well as the engine bay. the chassis could be weathered but make some areas look as if some attention has been paid to them like fresh paint or "new" parts. for wheels and tires i'd do the same, make them look brand new and nice and clean. remember too that stance is everything.

Dave

Dang Dave i like your thought processes I was thinking some of the same stuff, this would look really Kool as a restore in progress. Like someone just bought it after finding it in an old barn. Good stuff here in any respect I like it! Keep up the good work. :)

Thanks very much for all the feedback. Here's a couple new pics of the chassis/engine and wheels. I'm sorry they are so poor. I was looking for better lighting when the camera battery crapped out.

As you can see, I'm going with some plain black steelies. I like the idea of a barn find as has been mentioned and I'm certainly going to run with that idea. Going to add some washes (grime) and some running rust in a couple spots, but no other paint mods. No hood for this one I think, and I'm really going to try to showcase the engine. I'm stumped on the exhaust though. I'd done some suspension mods to get it lower but considering the height of the wheel/tire and a bit of realistic clearance for suspension travel, there is only so low I can get this.

I'd love to get more done sooner on this, but I've got maybe an hour a night to work, so it will be slow going. Bear with me.

Hmm...mistake on my part. Inserted the interior cup for the first time. It's deeper than I thought and pushes the chassis out of the body quite a bit more than I expected, screwing with my planned ride height. Gonna have to channel it. *sigh* Nothing ever works out like I planned it.

Some updates on the 37 Chev.

I've made with some washes at the panel joints and on the engine to get the lived in look. I used a matte clear on chrome to get the faded look, and I think it goes well with the look of the car. Very pleased how it's coming out. Next to channel the interior bucket so the chassis sits a bit higher up into the car.

You know what, I need a name for this one. Something cool for the license plate. Any ideas?

No idea for a name Rob ,but its looking .......uh great.Nah man shes looking fantastic, very beliveable. About my 3rd attempt at replying to this so I'll see if it stays this time. 1st the spell checker stole it ,2nd I E died ,.............
