davyou5 Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 (edited) Hello all , After some what of a failure with the '69 Nova SS, well more like a need to slow down abit as I was building it pretty fast, I am now on my next kit which is the Revell 2 n 1 '68 Charger R/T, and I had to wait for this kit, as it was not at the Hobby Lobby one day that I went there, and then suddenly there was one on the Shelf last week and I had to get it! So yes folks another Charger is on the loose here on this forum . I have gotten with it, Testor's Flame Black, and White Primer, I am debating whether or not to go ahead and buy Chysler's Engine Blue to paint the engine or if I should just go with a Gloss Orange that I have. And what color red to make the interior. Okay so I started this project two days ago, I sanded off the mold lines and some flash that I have seen on the body, I washed the parts with dish soap, let it dry, then I primered it and some other parts and that all of that sit for 24 hours. Today I spray painted the body with Testor's Flame Black and stuck it in the oven about 95 degrees for about 5 minutes, and then hand painted some of the parts. Pictures to come soon, as I am allowing the paint to cure 24 hours. This photo here is the inspiration of what I an going to do, the only trouble is that the Decals Superbee Stripe is in two colors Red and Black, So I have to do some sort of a red theme to the car. This is the inspiration I am using for my model, difference here is that the Charger in the picture as a vinyl top, and if I recall correctly the '68's were Hard top, and maybe with a Vinyl Option? Anyway I am using this a model to strive for. I went out searching for a really good and maybe unique Black paint that would closely match the one here, and I saw Testor's Flame Black on the Hobby Lobby website, and bought it at the store. Though the impression of this paint is not what I have expected it to be, this is why I think Hobby Lobby should show pictures of the color on their site. Okay, I just decided to melt down and take a few quick shots of the paint job, Tell me what you think of testor's Flame Black on this body, I think that it looks good, but has too much Sprinkles in it. I think that I have had a really good painting day, because no orange peel showed up with this paint job, using what I have learned from the many posters here, and from the "Back to the Basic's" topic, I Slow painted the body, Let it dry for 20 mins, instead of the 10 mins, that I would have normally given it, and the paint turned out great! I am really glad that I have taken this slow. I ordered some BMF, Chrome this time and when it comes in I will put it on. And this project here I am taking my time with. Later I will post the pictures of the parts I am painting on the Sprue. Thanks for looking . Edited October 13, 2010 by davyou5
Mr. Show Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 (edited) Looking good so far. The paint job looks really smooth and even. I also picked up this kit at Hobby Lobby the other day - it's really nice (honestly 50% of my decision was based on the included engine stand ). Since you're building it basically stock are you using the 440 Magnum? And yeah, I think they went a little overboard on the flakes in that, but it should look good after some clear. Yes I will be using the 440 magnum since I am building it stock. Yes they did go over board with the flakes, but I think that the paint really does look good on it, so I will keep it. Thanks for he Suggestion with the Clear, I will definitely us it on this build. that is coming along really good i like that color you have chose for that you cant beat a 68 charger all we need is a 70 now Yeah the 1970 Charger Special Edition! that would be awesome .
davyou5 Posted October 14, 2010 Author Posted October 14, 2010 Here is an update, some of the parts on the sprue that I have painted.
oldscool Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Be careful with that chrome. The two kits that I own have chrome that will rub off when you handle it. Before I build the second one I will spray the chrome sprue with clear gloss. oldscool

AceofBass Posted October 15, 2010 Posted October 15, 2010 Since that black has that much metalflake in it, you might be able to pull off the black stripe decal on the back..
davyou5 Posted October 15, 2010 Author Posted October 15, 2010 (edited) Since that black has that much metalflake in it, you might be able to pull off the black stripe decal on the back.. Hmmm.... you may have something going there, I only thought alittle about putting on the black stripe, though with this paint if the lighting is not so bright then it looks black, still though you have my old gears a turn'in. I think that I would give it a temporary try and see how it comes out, then let all here judge it if I can give good enough pictures..... Yes.... that would definitely make it different from the rest out here.... Hmmmm... Edited October 15, 2010 by davyou5
davyou5 Posted October 16, 2010 Author Posted October 16, 2010 Just to post my Update on what I have done so far. I have finished painting certain Parts in their Sprue, I have put at least two coats of clear on the Body, there is still more to do, And Slowly . I wet sanded the first coat of clear, now I am just waiting to return to the Hobby Lobby and get another can. Some of the Interior Detail, I decided to go with testor's Bright Red. Radiator, and Muffler Assembly. The Steering Wheel, Horns, and Other Interior and Engine Parts. The Battery, Transmission, and Fan Belt Assembly. And a few other Engine Parts, same with photo Below. I finished what I can painting the Grill and the Wheels. @ OldSchool, I did Spray the Clear on to the Chrome after I painted everything, as per suggestion. I never had an issue yet with the chrome coming apart Thankfully ! And thought you cannot see it well I decided to paint the R/T Wording too. Thanks for looking.
davyou5 Posted October 16, 2010 Author Posted October 16, 2010 Sorry Folks I forgot the Pictures of the Engine. Okay the instructions call for Chrysler's Engine Blue, and I tried to match it, I bought some testor's light blue with no good result, so ended up back in the Hobby Lobby only to still find that they do not have Chrysler's Engine Blue, the closest thing that I can could come up with was buying some Tropical Aqua, and it's close to the color but not that close.
Mr. Moparman Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 Ya know the clearance paints section at HL? Go look there that where I go and get my Crysler engine paints. OR Go to your locar dodge dealership walk up to parts and ask for a can of Chysler Engine Turquise
whale392 Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 Looks very good so far. The engine color looks good; and you can get 'Chrysler Engine Turquoise' at your local Mopar counter.
dwc43 Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 You can get some Mopar engine colors from Advance Auto and you can mail order all of Mopars engine colors from the 50's up from any dealer, Summit Racing, or Mancini as well. My local Advance does not carry all the colors so I just mail order mine from Summit Racing. http://www.summitracing.com/search/?keyword=Mopar%20Engine%20Paint&dds=1

Here's my update for today, I went back to Hobby Lobby as I needed some more of the Flame black for touch ups, and unfortunate to me they did not have any more, as these people are very slow to restock anything there at that location. So I bought some Model Master's Black instead and sprayed it on. The Idea to use the Black stripe was wiped away with my change in black color. okay so I sprayed on some clear after that, Wet Sanded it down, after drying, I used the Testor's Tac Cloth which really helped in getting rid of any scratches on the clear, and then I Placed the Red Stripe across the back. and then clear sprayed again. I then started on the Interior, I am using Testor's Bright Red, I presprayed the Seats, but when I added the Funky Foam to the floor I glued the seats on then waited for it to dry, and sprayed the foam and touched up the seats, seen in the picture below. That's about all I got done. And on my first posting I stated that there were only two Decal SuperBee Stripes, I was wrong and I did not look close enough there are three Red, White, and Black. I used the Red. This is also my first time placing any Decals that big on anything, It looks straight enough, But will be revieled in the end result. Thanks for looking. dwc43 Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 I think that color looks better than the other one. Good job. Having painting issues myself recently. Sometimes it turns out great and sometimes it does not.

Sometimes it turns out great and sometimes it does not. Thank you for the compliment. On my first posting I show a 68 R/T that I am aspiring to match, I do have other photo's of the '68 with the Red stripe on back and thought it was a great idea for this model since I am painting it black, so maybe it was a good thing Hobby Lobby ran out of the Flame Black because I really do like this Black color better. And I feel your pain, I have had some issues with other models, and as much as you try to get it almost perfect something always comes up, Orange Peel, Ghost's Etc. So far I have had only one problem and that was on the Hood, a low spot in the Paint In Which I have been trying to get rid of without stripping and repainting, lucky for me it is now only seen under certain lighting. Thanks again. Edited October 17, 2010 by davyou5

I don't have many pictures to show today, but I did allot, First I got the Chrome BMF in the mail, and got it placed on today, So it is my first time placing the CHROME BMF, My real first time with BMF is with Black Chrome and it taught me a thing or to when I put that stuff on the Nova SS. A Few Photo's Well the lighting is crappy. But I think you can see it well enough. Also I will note here that since I bought the BMF direct from that site there was a sticker on the Clear Plastic part that says New and Improved, I don't know how much of that is true though, maybe some of you here do know. Anyway, I since the Engine was dry enough I started to piece it together, Transmission is place on and I got to the Fan Belt Assembly and Fan, now that is drying over night I also put together the Wheels and tires, I did have the Red wall decals on them but I ended up having to pull them off again because one of the Decals was not fully dry, which will lead to another question for a different forum. A snap shot of the Wheels. For the Interior I placed the Firewall and the Pedals, and I am letting that dry over night. I was also able to successfully place two of the Rear Turn Signal lights on the Back and thankfully with out them falling apart or Shifting. I not entirely sure if they are both in the right position but this is where I have placed them on both sides. Well this is all for a productive day today. Thanks for looking. dwc43 Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 That's pretty close for the light. Now to get the clear red in the center of it should be fun as well as the amber in the front lights.

davyou5 Posted October 19, 2010 Author Posted October 19, 2010 Okay nothing more to really report, it is almost complete and will be completed later today!
